Anonymous Big 12 coach feels 2025 season 'really matters' for Sonny Dykes' future

sonny dykes

One Big 12 coach believes Sonny Dykes‘ future at TCU could hinge a lot on what happens in 2025. Dykes is preparing to enter his fourth season as the coach of the Horned Frogs, having already gone through a few ups and downs in his short span in Fort Worth.

The coach led TCU to a national championship appearance in his inaugural season in 2022 but followed it up with a 5-7 finish the following year. The Horned Frogs are 14-11 overall since Dykes’ first year, showing improvement this past season to go 9-4 and win the New Mexico Bowl.

I don’t disagree. Last years 9-4 record is misleading IMO. We ended up having arguably the easiest schedule in the conference, having missed ASU, KSU, BYU, CU, and ISU. I honestly don’t know if we make a bowl if we play all 5 of those teams. And I’m not trying to take away anything from the staff for their efforts for turning the season around and finishing 6-1 after starting 3-3. But the reality is we had a cakewalk the last 7 games.

This is a huge year to prove Sonny can permanently turn it around and maintain success. He has the tools for a big year.

And if he doesn't, he'll either be on the hot seat or get fired and we'll very, very, very likely be in the same position in 3-4 years if not sooner with the next coach, unless the new guy chooses to leave on his own prior to then.

The worst thing SD has done since he got here is have the best season in the last 80 years of TCU football right out of the gate, which set a totally unrealistic bar for the program and himself. There's a statue in front of DMC of a guy who had a 45-44 record in the Big 12, think about that.

And beat Texas 8 out of 12 in B12 play and six top 10 finishes including 2 and 4. I like Sonny Dykes but he is not a better coach than Patterson was.

I think we have a better team than last year's. Sadly, I record could be worse. First half of the season will tell the tale.
Yep, this is very much the case. Our schedule is brutal. At UNC, and then at KSU, at ASU, and at BYU (all projected as the top 3 in the conference) is just brutal. Then you throw in at WVU where we always play bad for some reason. Also SMU, Baylor, Iowa St, and Kansas will all be tests at home. If we finish 8-4, that’s a good year with that schedule.

It really depends *how* we play in these games with the schedule we have. If we’re getting our doors blown off, and we start hearing “idk how this happened” again in press conferences, yeah I’d put him on the hot seat. But if we’re winning and competitive in close games that we don’t end up winning, then he’s fine. People were rightfully upset at how we lost the SMU, UCF, and UH games with the braindead nonsense excuses in the postgame pressers.

If Sonny doesn’t find someone to do what Savion’s rushing did the last several game of last year, it will be a very sad 2025. We can’t live on Hoover’s arm alone. It’s good, but it ain’t that good…and his “dual threat” is suspect…

you have got to be a bot

the statue is of a future hall of fame guy who brought this program into prominance and won 2 NY bowls. Also a Big 12 title.

SD's offense is not new, like the first year. Everybody had seen what he and KB do. So now it's up to SD to show he can sustain and not continue the "no win November" mantra.

If we do struggle this year, I doubt our fan base is going to raise millions of $ to fire Sonny. Our fans complained about rising ticket costs & the loss of a home game against an ACC team, so they are raise how many millions to fire Sonny?

Come on.

What alumni are going to fork a million bucks to fire him? A lot of alums are focusing on their new Saturday tee times rather than TCU football games after they gave up their season tickets.

I think the big 12 coach is just jealous.
Sonny went 9-4 last year.
Defense will be settled into a system this year.
We have a strength and conditioning program that is an envy of even those in the NFL. (I keep an eye out for things from KAZ cause he even warns us old guys - "muscle is the body's 401K")

Plus, Sonny probably has a good feel for how to work the refs by now.

I've said 11 wins in the reg season, and I'm sticking with that ... as the floor.

7 out of 10, and in those 7 years in which we beat them, UT was 47-39 overall and 32-30 in the Big 12......so while GP certainly deserves credit for beating UT, a lot of other coaches were too and its not like we were some kind of giant killers or anything. UT was just very, very average during that period of time. Now do his record vs. the Oklahoma schools.

GP was a great coach in the 2000's and early 2010's, better than SD, but I think SD is every bit of the coach GP post-Bumpas was. I think the record speaks to that, and I think it takes some serious selective amnesia to pretend that we were some perennial force to be reckoned with when GP was here. And I think our fan base underappreciates SD quite a bit because of that selective amnesia.

Was I supposed to type something here?

Our Crack Staff has a big problem with talent evaluation. They pick a guy early on, and don't deviate until it is plain to all that the guy can't do it after all, and then they panic. Luckily for us, the panic strategy of Savion at RB was beautiful.

While we did establish a good rhythm towards the end of the season, the kids clearly did not buy into what our Crack Staff was selling them early on. The UH disaster was indicative of a team just giving up and mailing it in, and I would hate to see that again this upcoming season.
