Old TCU Football Program

Robert Keene, a former Detroit Lion and who had been the 38th oldest living professional football player, recently passed away. His daughter is my next-door neighbor. Cleaning out his possessions, she came across a University of Detroit Titan(his alma mater) versus TCU football program, dated November 9, 1940. On gameday, which was homecoming for the University of Detroit, it sold for 25 cents. It is in superior condition. The Frogs were coached by Dutch Meyer and he is pictured in the program, along with the Frogs captain, Clarence Alexander. Interesting to note some of the advertisements in the program: Philip Morris cigarettes; Philco shoulder strap portable radio; Goebel Gold Label Beer; Old Gold cigarettes; Stroh's Bohemian beer; the Postal Telegraph System; Altes Imperial beer and Altes Lager beer; Chesterfield cigarettes; Five Star anti-freeze for 25 cents a quart; Schmidt's beer; and 1941 Ford cars. What's the oldest TCU football program you have or have come across?

One of my more prized possesions is a 1955 TCU A&M program. It features among others from the Ags Bear Bryant, Gene Stallings, Charlie Krueger, John David Crow, Jack Pardee and Ken Hall. From our Frogs it has among many others Abe Martin, Dutch Meyer, Norm Hamilton, Hugh Pitts, Chuck Curtis and Jimmy Swink. The cost was .25 cents and it was given to me last Christmas by my Aggie friends from Corpus Christi. As it turns out that was the only game the Frogs lost that year on their way to the Cotton Bowl.

What was Old Scribe voted most likely to do?

He was still mad about the move from Thorp Spring. To Waco.

Y'all forgot that even though oldscribe bleeds pretty purple, he went to Texas.

Yeah, back when it was called Mexico.

Yeah! tough one to lose by 3 points before a packed house. Frogs were riding high after starting season by blowing out Kansas, Texas Tech, Arkansas and Alabama (with Bart Starr @qb). Both teams were in top 10, and there were lots of big hits on either side.

Do either of you have pics of the programs?

No I don't have a pic. The cover is yellow with two punters on the cover. One is wearing a blue shirt with no number and yellow pants and the other has a white shirt with a number first number is partly blocked by the punters leg but could be a 3 or an8 and the second # is 8. Price is 25 cents and it celebrates the NCAA 50th anniversary.

Not having much to do on a Sunday pm I listed all the adds in the program. Some of these may still be around and some may not but these are the poeple and companies who supported TCU back then. 80/20 rule...always has been in effect. We forget the crappy parts of the show years later. Plus, avoid the last half hour.
