Offensive Strategy Lacking All Year

I am not a coach and therefore am open to being shown why it wasn't, but our new offense, even udner Pachall before was uninspired. We basically run a long, slowly developing read option every time. Occasionally, they try something different but it is completely out of context. nothing builds on the prior plays, etc. And if we're going to just run because we don't trust the pass, then let's get vreative and use more people in the backfield. Give the defense something to think about.

I hated that we never ran from under center. And the new coordinators are Schultz predictable, like the play out of the end zone in the 4th quarter today.

Fuentes offense was much different and his running plays would have been a benefit this year.

Sure wish we did have Fuente this year so this myth that he was some sort of play calling genius could be put to rest. Sure he was a solid play caller and schemer, but you can only work with what you have. See Tigers, Memphis offensive stats.

There is nothing mythical about how poor our playcalling has been this year. It's just been flat aweful. Would Fuente have put up the stats of recent seasons under these circumstances? Not likely. But, I think it's fair to say that his track record as an OC and QB coach suggests that he would have been able to figure out a few ways to better utilize the talent that we do have by better formulating a strategy that did not have us relying on the same few plays to the point of futility.

We really need to get some new blood on the offensive staff because we have a defense that can win a conference championship next year if they can get any help from the offense. What we have is simply not good enough at this level. Period.

Fuente was good at the chess match part of offensive strategy. He thought in sequences of plays, rather than one play at a time. By contrast, it appears that our current duo, tend to call a play then see how that worked out before calling another. One play never seems to set up the other.

I have heard from various sources that Jarret Anderson is the main play caller and thats scary because he does not appear to have any imagination whatsoever.

Hope Patterson doesn't let this go on as long, with this crew, that he did with Schultz.

We averaged 400 ypg and 30 points a game with tons of turnover at RB, a young OL, and a RS freshman at QB who was gimpy hurt in several games, taking away his best asset. I just don't see Fuente doing much better. We still were about middle of the pack in offensive numbers despite those handicaps. As Fuente proved this year at Memphis, you have to have the horses to call plays effectively.

I think all of these extenuating circumstances probably bought this staff another year. But it's not like we were rolling prior to losing Pachall. We could have done better with the talent we have, IMO. And I don't know why we didn't roll Boykin out more.

Well put. No rhythm to the play calls.

And of course, it's extremely hard to tell exactly how good they are because we have no passing game unless the pocket parts like the red sea and Boykin has plenty of time.

I would bring the OCs back for next year, but if things go south with Pachall at the helm, have a plan B because there is no excuse at that point.

Yeah we were. Turnovers were killing us, but the offense was clicking and Patterson wasn't worried about the turnovers. We lost Waymon James in the Kansas game also. The SMU game was played in a hurricane... need to revise the rules on playing in conditions like that.

Without commenting on the lack of imagination, I believe your understanding is accurate about who is the dominant play caller. And FWIW (probably not much), I am going to have to amend my earlier contention about offensive strategy and in-game play calling being sanctioned by GP. From what I have recently learned, historically GP would only become involved with the offensive side when it was time for a critical "go for it" or "don't go for it" type of 4th down situation. I still maintain that one of the most critical differences was Andy's ability and permission to audible.

I think with Pachall and James (who I had predicted heading into the year would be all Big 12), we average 450-500 ypg and 35-40 ppg this year, and there would be a totally different tune about the offensive coordinators. Heck, a healthy Boykin and we average 425-450/ 33-35.

Again, what do people think about the Memphis performance against some pretty pitiful CUSA defenses this year. CUSA has eight teams in the bottom third of the NCAA total defense, including 5 in bottom 30. Yet Memphis only averaged 318 yards per game? Can't imagine what people around here would say about that production.

Ironically Memphis has a pretty good defense in relative terms in the CUSA- #3 in that league, #47 overall. They actually turned that around pretty well from last year (#118 in defense last year). Defense is what kept them in games this year. But they had a terrible offense in a league with terrible defenses. Obviously he doesn't have the horses he needs yet, but that is the whole point. You can't call great plays without the horses (or at least healthy ones).

Young/ bad O-line play makes it hard to run a consistent offense you (mating between GDU & Native Frog) idiots.

Really? Then stop (mating between GDU & Native Frog) running the same (EXODUS 20:7--I'm an Idiot!)ed play every (mating between GDU & Native Frog) 1st down if u KNOW the blocking sucks!!

The o line is awful...yes. But the play calling is worse. The failure to understand strengths and weaknesses of our team is unforgivable. M

OLine was fine today, they were fine last week. Not great, but fine. Good enough to be able to have a normal passing game with the type of receivers we have.

I have no idea why we do not just basically tell Brandon Carter, Ladarius, Skye, Boyce, to go run, and then throw to one of them. Our WRs are unbelievably talented and we don't use them nearly as much as we should.

To me, it is clear that if CGP wanted different play-calling, etc..., he would have got it. He's the boss, It is not as if he is

a) unaware of the issues confronting his offensive unit

b) powerless to cause the offensive approach to change

Before calling others idiots, you might want to demonstrate your ability to express yourself by completing one post on this website that doesn't rely on blowing up the profanity filter. Right now, I don't perceive you to be a person of significant intellect.
