In some of those tougher decades I can’t imagine how hard, but glad you made it through them and got to see the good times.
Exactly! I've wondered why my Dad kept hauling us to the games when we lived in Ardmore, OK, in the '70's, knowing there was a sure loss ahead. He just always had hope. And hope for the next year. But becoming a die hard fan made the rise under Coach P and the great accomplishments in '09, '10, '14 and '22 so much sweeter.

Prince of Purpoole II

Reigning Smartarse
You know those years 1973-83 that Big Frog II mentions were the years my TCU fandom solidified. My dad played football at TT, stepdad at N Texas and uncles at A&M and Baylor so any time those teams were at AGC so were we but I was always secretly rooting for the Frogs. I don’t know why, maybe it was an underdog thing.

OMG! I will forget that hit! The sound echoed like a cannon shot! BOOM!
For those who forgot Deja was a last minute switch from TCU to UT as a recruit and my recollection is he was talking smack that day before that hit.
@Big Frog II - I was there for many of those games you mentioned starting as a youngster in the 60’s and 70’s — The Bad Ol’ Days. It appears you have surpassed my Dad, the great Leap Frog, who toiled as a salesman based in Oklahoma City in the 1950s and ‘60’s, and missed games in that period. His first game was the TCU-SMU Game of the Century of 1935 featuring Sammy Baugh. Dad was 5. He said he remembered the thump of Baugh’s punts. He believed the 2014 Frogs were the school’s best team. He could no longer attend after 2016.
My grandfather saw Baugh play. Always said he was as good a DB and punter as he was a passer. When he got to the NFL, he had one year where he led the NFL passing and punting average. A couple of years later, it was passing and interceptions. No one will ever do that again.

ACS - 1973 - lightening struck the old upper deck and a large chunk of concrete broke off and fell into the seats directly beneath in the lower bowl.

My dear and long departed buddy Hubcap Carter said, “Boy, it’s a good thing it was Rice and TCU, or some fans might have been seriously hurt.”

Go Frogs!

When I was a kid and living on Westcliff Road North near the stadium, a group of us would sneak into the games via old drainage pipes. In those days the entrance to the games was at the outside fences rather than the stadium itself. All that came to a screeching halt after a north end zone brawl featuring rented cushions rather like a pillow fight. Obviously admission for underage kids were tightened by the next game.

Also I recall as a kid watching Jim Swink run in his amazing open field dodges and darts, little to know that years later he would become a colleague, friend and a physician who treated my mother.

Lived in Clark, first floor north. Next door lived Rox Covert and Donnie Smith. Donnie became a surgeon and spent time in Vietnam. And ole Rox, everybody, almost everybody knows he has multiple dealerships around Austin called Covert Autos. Rox was a tight end and Donnie was a running back. I still think about Rox who is a prankster. Rox was a heck of a golfer matter of fact they tried to get him on the golf team several times but always said no. Rox could take a driver, turn the club completely around from the head, and in mid swing put the head correctly, and whack it straight down the middle for 330 yds every time. And Donnie, none better, just a quiet non-assuming great guy. I'd bet he was a fine surgeon too.

How about a walk-on from Turkey, Tx named Bob Cosell? Oh boy, talk about throwing out the mold, they did on Bob. He claimed his father could stream over a box car and I don't doubt it if you knew Bob. Bob once said he rode an antelope after he jumped from a moving pickup bed and wrestled one to the ground so he could ride it. Should be noted Bob was 6'7". Back in those days, we thought and did things differently than today's crowd.

And one more, used to be a 7-11 on Barry so one night after gathering enough beer to last the weekend one of our STAR fullbacks offered a gag by putting a block of wood so the trunk lid so it wouldn't slam down and injure the *RB, got into the trunk, put a whole bottle of ketchup on his arm, and hung it out of the back trunk with lid slightly, and proceeded up and down Barry several times. Cops finally caught up to them and told the boys doing the prank, people were really upset because an arm all bloody with ketchup was hanging out of the trunk, and thought the mob had moved in and was teaching people a lesson.

My hv times changed. Now they just shoot you for doing such deeds.

(2015 vs UT) Those unis were the worst I've ever seen us wear. My opinion, of course. Naturally, others will feel differently.

But just awful! :)
Nothing will ever be worse than the stupid blood shooting anthracite whatever they were from a few years ago, nothing.

You are the new Paul Ridings! Well done, but I know it was fun too. I have a similar record but didn’t get here until ‘71 although I made 60’s games home and away. I missed a couple during your streak due to 2 Weddings and a Funeral! I did know Davey O’Brien and his mother too! I worked on The Jim Wacker TV show and once had a streak of 36 straight home and away! Nothing to compare to Big Frog II though. People might tell us to get a life, but I wouldn’t change a thing. The ride from those UTA games to the National Championship Game has been a sports dream story. Keep on going my friend!

Mentioning Paul Ridings jogged my memory slightly. Refresh my memory as to his TCU claim to fame.

That began my current 60 year streak of not missing a single TCU home football game. TCU beat Clemson 14-10 on a beautiful day. I think that's 321 straight games counting the Fort Worth Bowl. I had missed Oct. 10, 1964 that was ironically Texas Tech. The next year we would go to a bowl. Little did I know it would be 1984 before we would go to another.

Through very fortunate luck and great health I have not missed a game. Being married and having three kids luck had to be involved with their activities to not interfere.
Best games: Utah 2009, of course. The most hyped I have ever seen a TCU game. The game delivered as well. Louisville 2003, Cards FG hitting the crossbar to keep our unbeaten streak alive. Texas 2015, leading the Longhorns 30-0 at the end of a quarter was payback for 1974. Loved every minute. Gary should have scored 82. He did against Texas Tech the year before. OU 2014, beating #4 Oklahoma and Stoops foreshadowed the season we were about to have. Arkansas 1981, finally ending their multi-decade winning streak against us. OSU 2022, beating the #5 Cowboys in comeback fashion in double overtime got this team headed in the right direction for our playoff run. Baylor 2015, one of the most miserable weather days but beating our hated rival in double overtime made it not so bad.

Worst games: Texas 1974, 81-16 in embarrassing fashion. Sadly it was the most points we scored all year. UTA 1975, 1979, losing twice to UTA is the pinnacle of embarrassment. Northwestern State 2001, Gary's first year. I think he learned a lot about coaching that game. 1973-1983 most all games. We were outmanned and underfunded. Miserable years to sit in the stands and hope we scored wondering if it would ever get better.

Strange/unusual games: Oregon 1977, our player comes off the bench to make a tackle. Rice 1973, lightening strikes the upper deck during a thunderstorm. The refs wisely suspended play until the storm passed. Texas 1976, game played in the snow. Got to hurl snowballs at the Texas team. Texas 2013, sat through a 2 hour 40 minute rain. Baylor 1966, Bob Hope who was in attendance came down at half-time and spoke and joked with the crowd at half-time.

Maybe be off a year here or there, but after this many games many of them are running together. Regardless, here's to 60 more years of TCU home football games. I'll post my recollections again in 2064.

That's flat out amazing. Well done.
