Observations from yesterday... Sorry for length

Frog Attack II

1) great bounce back win. Had to have it to stay relevant at all
2) QB: Hoover can really sling that ball... Has a CB mentality regarding INT's - short memory... That said, his first one was ill-advised for sure. I think the 2nd one was on Savion. Need him to run more. I like inserting Hauss for some plays here and there, just need to mix it up so it's not so obvious it's a QB power. And @Hauss, don't go out of bounds when we're trying to run clock!
3) RB: no doubt Payne should be the starter... Hits the hole much quicker than Cook. Night and day difference once he got going.
4) OL: better! We'll see better defenses down the road but I finally saw a push, especially late in the game.
5) WR: I don't recall a drop yesterday. Maybe a bad route or 2 but that's a really good group. JJE did some nice things as well. What can you say about Bech? Wow
6) special teams: good and bad. Great job JP and blockers! FG kicker needs some work - zero confidence.
7) DL: waaaaay too small. Don't eat up many blocks and we stunt like crazy (most of the time out of the play). Although, an unheralded play from the game was the batted pass on 3rd & goal that forced a kick. That defensive stand was massive and they played better late in the game... But we are way behind recruiting / NIL with this bunch.
8) LB: not bad. Frustrating at times but decent at times. Struggling to understand why #4 isn't making more tackles. Seems to get eaten up too easy. Maybe that's on the DL statement above too. The most important thing to me yesterday was that we FINALLY covered an RB wheel route in the 3rd qtr... Believe it was #33. I was shocked.
9) DB: Canada had a great game IMO. 13 - not so much. Need to make some chgs... #2 though played an outstanding game... Was everywhere. Clark plays like an upper class men sometimes and then like a freshman at times.

Coaching: I was ok with it. Best OC plan in a while - actually tried to run the ball and controlled the clock for the most part. That 4Q 6 min drive was beautiful! DC - it's really hard to grade IMO. We made some stops and clearly some adjustments as the 2nd half was much better... But with this DL, it's so hard to tell what our plan is.... Biggest weakness on the team.

I hear a lot about the penalties and it being the coaching and the undisciplined nature of the team. I agree to a certain extent, but man these kids do dumb sh_t, which they've been taught not to do since pee wee football. Maybe the coaching piece is that they need to be yanked out of the game immediately... I just can't explain some of it.

Was I supposed to type something here?
To me, it wasn't so much of a nuts-and-bolts thing as it was a late surge of confidence and strength that coursed through both sides of the ball. The defense was stopping them, and our offense was starting to push people around. Neither of these things were present for the last two weeks and it was a huge morale shift.

Winning is better than losing. Hopefully this is the first step in an improbable mid-season turnaround. I won't believe in this staff again until I see disciplined, physically tough wins over good teams. If we go out to Salt Lake City and put up a real fight for four quarters (or better yet, actually win), that might be something.

Was pleased with Payne. Was also pleased with Cooks improvement. He was staying between the tackles and hitting the holes better. Fewer penalties was nice. Was really pleased with the teams grit. After the first turnover and Kansas marched right down n scored I thought we were going to get run out of the stadium. Protect the ball a little better and we run them out of there.

Still not sure why we didn't challenge the first fumble. He was down.

I finally got around to watching the game last night; I wasn't able to see it live on Saturday. A few general observations that have all been made before at least once, I'm sure:

Whatever the o-line's limitations in run-blocking (that won't magically get better mid-season), Payne makes the run-game better, and Cook also seemed better with Payne in the game. Kind of how it goes with RBs, I think. The old adage that 2 QBs is no QBs is almost inverse for RBs; if you have two good ones they'll each do better for having the other in the game. Can't help but wonder if we could have hung on for the win against UCF if Payne had featured and we'd committed to trying the ground game in the 4th quarter. It certainly couldn't have gone any worse.

Ten years from now we'll still be annoyingly reminding people that Jack Bech went to TCU. He'll probably be dating whomever the next T. Swift happens to be and trying to find places to keep all of his Super Bowl rings.

Run defense still looked suspect up the middle at times, and I really don't know why Kansas didn't just pound the rock other than the obvious need to try (probably unsuccessfully, alas) to keep Jalon Daniels in one piece all the way to December. I think we'll be in trouble against Utah in that regard. I don't think we saw anything that changes the book on how you beat TCU if you're physically up to following the script.

Overall, though, defense was better, obviously. I'm surprised how much Broughton seems to be struggling after looking so good against Stanford. I think Avalos's scheme is pretty demanding on corners, so maybe he's just figuring out how to adjust to the role.

Good win, generally. Road conference wins are always good; it keeps the season alive in a way that team psychology probably needed. If we can take care of business against Houston that should give the coaches an opportunity to get the buy-in and focus necessary to take a serious run at being ready for Utah.

It was good to see JP's punt return. When you track many of our best years, we almost always had a game-changer in the return game, going back all the way to Brian Bonner. Gray, Kerley, Turpin and Davis all had practically season-changing moments. We were pretty weak last year, but hopefully this is a sign that this part of the game is improving.
I can't believe you forgot Korie Rhodjers.
