NORMAN — The gauntlet Oklahoma’s defense has faced the last three games has been brutal. Baylor, West Virginia and Oklahoma State — three straight teams that spread a defense from sideline to sideline, stretch them until they find a weak spot and run plays at a blistering pace.

The numbers were ugly. The Sooners gave up 131 combined points and 1,692 yards in those three games. Somehow, OU won all three.

“There are a lot of issues in what we’re having here of late. Some of it’s scheme; some of it’s the talent you’re playing against,” OU defensive coordinator Mike Stoops said. “They’re exploiting some of the weaknesses of our defense, let’s put it that way.” ...

Something tells me we open it up on offense Saturday. OU may stuff the box. So fling it around some to our skillies. Get Boyce and Carter involved. Then that could really open up the run. Nothing to lose. Am I wrong?

Who beat OU? ND and KSU. Did they open it up or grind it out?

OU can't stop the run. It has no LBs due to injury (I guess the Sooners can't survive the week in week out grind) and their D line is not much better. I would not be surprised if we threw the ball less than 15 times.

We tried do that a few times vs. Texas and the plays were either too slow to develop or Texas blew them up. Hope we don't give up on that though.

OU not a good rush defense so I am guessing we will work that first, then look to hit some big pass plays. We hit a couple of beauts against UTerus.

Patterson coaches different on the road as well. Same exact scenario unfolded in Austin that unfolded in Ft. Worth vs. Kansas State. Intercepted opponent on their first drive and then drove the ball into their territory. 4th down and short vs Kansas State we punt, they get the ball and score and never look back. Against Texas we go for the 4th down, get it, score a TD and never look back. SAME EXACT SITUATION.

I didn't mean pass happy. But keep OU honest on d by spreading the ball around. Get it to Boyce and Carter in open spaces.

PCF said KSU and ND had "grind it out" wins over OU. Some stats from those games:

KSU (spread option) - Klein 150 yds passing, 80 rushing; Hubert 130 yds rushing.
ND (run first spread) - Golson 175 yds passing, 65 yds rushing; Riddick and Wood ea w/ 75 yds rushing.

One word - balance.

I love to sling it around as much as anybody but GP is gonna wanna milk the clock, shorten the game and run the ball...not let their good DBs and crazy Stoops Bros. coverages take advantage of TB.

Were gonna run the [Craig James] outta the ball if we can.

Since TB took over, I have seen less WR screens than with CP...I saw an attempt in the UT game but the pass was poorly thrown and fell incomplete.

Has anyone else noticed this trend?

I actually think that the WR screen game has been missing from our offense. We have great WRs that need the ball and WR screens should be high-percentage completions that are just extensions of the run game.

You could also point to the end of the 2nd OT against Tech, and the end of the 2nd OT against WVU. I get that you play for the tie at home and the win on the road and all that, but why we went for a 3rd OT against Tech when the team was obviously gassed is beyond me.

At the same time, we probably shouldn't complain about a few tough calls in tight situations when GP has all but guided a JV sqaud to a winning record in its first season in the XII. Been a fun ride.

KSU 21 pass att., 44 rushes. ND 27 pass att., 39 rushes.

Both teams ran their QB and played more ball control than downfield passing.
