Here is a system that will never happen, but could take out some of the subjectivity of rankings:
80 schools divided into 4 twenty team conferences, each conference with 2 ten team divisions.
Play all of your division schools every year giving 9 division games every year. Only division results count in determining the division champ.
If there is a 12-game regular season, then three games could be played against whoever - ranging from big money intersectional games to body bag games of each school's choosing. These three games do not count in divisional standings.
In each conference there will be two divisional champs who play for the conference championship (essentially an eight-team play-off).
Four conference champs enter a play-off to determine National Champ.
Some subjectivity would still remain if tie breakers need to be used to determine division champs.
This could also work with eight 10-team conferences, rather than four 2-division conferences. Then the 8 conference champs could (with no division champs) rotate playing each other on a seven-year cycle. Still essentially an 8 team play off.
This kind of system could leave all rivalry games intact, whether in the division, or in the extra three games each year.
Problem - Would 80 schools be available or acceptable? Maybe have 8 conferences/divisions with a lower number of schools. Endless debate. BIG 10 and SEC probably would not want to split the money or potentially decrease their chances of getting into the playoff.
