We used to play Top 10 teams in non-conference

Ohio State
OU
LSU
UT
Nebraska
Clemson
Texas

Now we play:
2026
UNC
Gambling
Arkansas State

2027
Alcorn State
North Texas
Sam Houston

This nonconference is impossible to get excited about. Now that Texas – OU aren’t in the conference, you need some marque nonconference. Who wants to pay up for season tickets to see Sam Houston and Alcorn State?

Bonus, I have a theory your academic reputation is somewhat affected by the company you keep in sports. Are North Texas and Sam Houston State the peers we want to be associated with.

I think attendance will suffer with the lack of fun/exciting games. Sure, the coach will be able to say he had a winning season or get his bonus. But the fans will suffer and the stadium will be empty. I really feel bad for the students too. It took Gary Patterson 20 years of beating top 25 teams and having exciting games to get the culture of filling our stadium and most of Fort Worth tailgating and being involved. Our schedule looks terrible to me and I think we risk going back to the 1990s.

I went and looked up the rankings of a few of our premier nonconference games. These were legit and drew national attention. A lot more fun than Alcorn and Sam Houston.

You're going back 25+ years. The most recent game you listed was 10 years ago and our coach at the time wanted out of the home and home that was originally scheduled, that's why it was played at JerryWorld.

We schedule our OOC like all but a handful of teams in major college football. Try and play the easiest schedule as possible while simultaneously trying to not make it look like that's what you're doing. It's an art, and just about everyone tries to do it. And we've basically been doing that since we joined the B12. The LSU game was scheduled when we were in the MWC, and that too was moved to JerryWorld.

When we were in the WAC/Conference USA/MWC we had to have those games. Now that we are in the Big 12 those possible loses could mean the difference between getting in the playoffs or not. Texas saw first hand how that worked last year losing in Columbus. Besides, the only place any of those teams will play us is at Jerry's World.

Probably more tolerable as well. University of North Texas games have always been fun. Once went to Denton to watch them play NMSU for their conference championship and a trip to the New Orleans Bowl. Was getting high 5's fram Random fans when the Mean Green made a good play. Heck I don't get that from TCU fans at our home games.

LSU was the same.

I don't know for sure if it was GP who pushed for the one game (like I know he did with OSU), but it was originally supposed to be a home and home.

When TCU ditched the SMU game the scheduling plan was always to play 1 low to mid level P4 game, 1 Group game, and 1 FCS game.
North Texas is an anomaly, as they replaced Stanford when the ACC went to 9 conference games.
None of the fans ever thought the Group game would be a fairly low level Group team. Most people were thinking more competitive teams like Tulane, USF, or Memphis, and NOT Arkansas St, Sam Houston, Louisiana, & Texas State.
Now we’re stuck with it.

Texas should have beaten Fla and not get blown out by UGA.

When we were in the WAC/Conference USA/MWC we were one of those teams…a pretty good “one of those” teams, but still seen as a second tier team…

In reality, that is not true.
It may look good on paper, but beating unranked teams will NOT get a P4 team to the CFP, unless they win the CCG.…and as you said, there is still a good chance of losing at least 1 game.

- In order to make the CFP, a B12 team must at least win the CCG….and/or make the Top 11 (highest ranked group team champ is automatic)
- In order to make the Top 11, two ranked wins will most likely be needed. Especially for the B12, which is disrespected nationally.

At the end of the ‘25 regular season:
* T. Tech was 4th and had 4 ranked wins
* BYU was 12th, and didn’t get in, with 2 ranked wins, and only 2 losses to #4.
* Utah was 15th with -0- ranked wins and 2 ranked losses to #4 & #12
* Arizona was 17th with -0- ranked wins and 2 ranked losses.
* Houston was 21st with 1 ranked win and 1 ranked loss to #4

When those 1-2 extra home games are against and FCS or Sun Belt team, is it really all that more fun? Of course it doesn't matter for fans who live outside of DFW, but even for the locals you can go to a bar for any away game, and I dare say have a more compelling time watching us play big time competition than future Enterprise Rentacar associates.
