Until there’s a major snub and obvious dilemma in choosing a 4th over a 5th, it won’t change.

Didn’t we just have that this year? All the “just wait until x happens” scenarios have kind of already played out and they still aren’t doing anything. That should indicate the status quo might be here for awhile.

I wonder if there is no more money that ESPN can throw at it if it expands and fear losing it. If so maybe they really lobby hard against it. This is just wild speculation FYI.

There's a 10-year CFP contract that keeps the playoff at four teams. Jeff Long said when the contract was initiated that the CFP will stay at four teams until we get to the end of, or near the end of, the contract and then negotiations can begin to expand the playoff. We still have a few years to go.

Correction about the number of years on the contract. From the CFP website:

The four-team playoff preserves the importance, excitement and compelling nature of the regular season, which is the best in sports. It also maintains the tradition of bowl games, which are unique to the American sports culture. The agreement for the four-team playoff extends for 12 years, through the year 2026.
