NFL must fix this bad rule.
The folly of the 2009 NFC Championship BountyGate game resulted in the rule being tweaked in 2010. Prior to that, a field goal on the first OT possession won the game. Maybe last night’s game will further change OT.
The Vikings lost that 2009 NFC championship, 31-28, after a coin flip and ensuing Saints FG, helped by a BS pass interference call on an uncatchable pass. This after the Vikings dominated the Saints in the Superdome, 475-257 in total yardage. And 27 of those Saints yards were in OT! Saints scored 28 points in regulation with only 230 yards of offense due to five Viking turmovers, and several BS calls and non-calls. This included Favre taking a brutal high/low hit which aggravated his ankle on an interception, and yet no roughing call—that hit and gimpy ankle then factored in again on Favre’s second interception on what should have been a game winning drive in regulation, but instead it went to OT.
The Saints were gifted a Super Bowl at the Vikings and Favre‘s expense. It was egregious enough that the OT rule was changed—a touchdown instead of a field goal on the first possession of OT was subsequently needed for the win.
