NFL considering doing-away with kickoffs

I haven't seen this posted/discussed yet on KFC. What are your thoughts? And do you see this "trickling down" to the college level and eventually high schools?

Would a team just get the ball on the 20 yard line to start the game?

I believe that they are not sincerely considering this. I think they just want everyone to think they are considering it.

So, discuss it, decide not to, and then some dude breaks his neck or gets concussed on a kick-off.

The liability in that situation is enormous.

And the punt return game isn't as violent, but there are still lots of collisions with that part of special teams. Maybe teams will not be able to return punts either. The punt will just be downed whereever the ball stops in the field of play or obviously a touch back if it goes into the endzone.

I don't know if this is the rule in Texas but Hawaii high school football does not allow a kickoff to be returned if the ball is caught by the return man in the end zone. It is an automatic touchback, as though it went through the end zone.

This is interesting. I wasn't aware such a rule existed at any level. When I played in high school in Texas, such a rule didn't exist. I doubt it does now in Texas.

Scores, winning/losing, tackling. None of that matters as long as everyone has fun and hugs after the game.

Doubt they would do this because all they care about is money and that would cost them some viewer $$$

They should do away with slant routes too. It seems to me that the most violent hits come on those in the middle of the field.

That has happened before and it will happen again, but the NFL is not held accountable for that. People consent to play this game and they know the risks. It is not the NFL's fault if a player is hurt in the game. The NFL actually profits from the violence.

You know, the punting situation would be more interesting. What if there were no return? The ball is dead upon striking the ground, or flying out of bounds. It is live if striking any player, before hitting the ground.

11 guys rushing the punter, only 10 blocking.

It would put enormous pressure on the snap, the speed of the kick, protection and punting for distance, not hang time.

Interesting.

Keep thinking that. We'll see who is held accountable.

Not saying its right, but ...
