Newy interviewed an emotional Coach P about the title game

It's gotta be a tremendous blow to his ego that Sonny Dykes and Co came in and within ONE year has this team playing for a national championship. I also think it must be agonizing for him to look in the mirror and confront his own personal failings with regards to how he handled this program really from about 2016 and on, his unwillingness to change and perhaps his loyalty to staff that needed to go. Complacency set in. That certainly makes it hard to motivate your athletes too.

If I were GP, I think I would rather watch the game on TV, than be in attendance for this. Too painful in many ways, and bittersweet too.
Or go on a 2-week African safari, leaving about today. Seriously, I'd do something like that if I were in his shoes. Completely go off the grid.

Has anyone ever worked somewhere for 20+ years? I'm going to guess that at least a few of us have. Even if things ended on a not-so-positive note, there are going to be some ties that bind. I remember after one of the games Patterson was quoted as asking something like, "Any word on how TCU did?" I wasn't sure how he meant that at first; was he hoping we'd won or was he hoping we'd lost?

After watching this interview, though, I remembered this man gave his blood, sweat, and vocal chords to this campus and program, and yes, he was VERY well-compensated for it. He was the literal linchpin on our football program for over 20 years, until he wasn't able to perform the job up to his own legacy's standard. I'm sure this whole scenario is bittersweet for him on so many levels, and what a lot of people have lost sight of is that he's still a human being. He is allowed to be upset at how things ended, probably on both sides of the fence, and I'm sure he has ragrets [sic].

I would hazard a guess to say that just about every one on this board is a dyed in purple Frog Fan for life, and that was after going to school there for a handful of years. There are college-aged kids out there that have never known consecutive TCU losing seasons in their lifetimes. CGMFP was the reason for that.

If not adoration, the man at LEAST deserves our respect.

I guarantee you Sonny and Donati do not want, and would never let Patterson anywhere near this team right now. He absolutely will not be a part of this win.
Yes, it would be a mistake, however after the win in the locker, you bet!
On being emotional, he's just like any director, manager, executive who spent a storied experience, then see something like this, it would make you emotional too. Don't misunderstand, I'm not opposed to GP being a part of it all, but after. Emotional.... I can guarantee you, if we win, I'll be bent over in joy and disbelief and crying my eyes out.. Disbelief....??? It's taken this admiration and past to get us to this point and folks it has been a LONG time coming! I fully expect this university to be even more aggressive in the coming days.

Heard yesterday an estimation of the additional revenue Ft. Worth has enjoyed because of this TCU team. It is not substantiated, but I asked them to repeat that because I couldn't believe what I heard!!

And oh, BTW, this remark is directed toward the fools who constantly remind us that Georgia is far superior. Every time TCU HAS PLAYED an SEC team,.....little ol' TCU WON! Just a few years ago, Dabo understood who TCU was when the game ended!

On BAP this morning, it was said, THIS WILL BE THE BIGGEST STORY IN the history of FT. WORTH AND TCU EVER ... REPEAT EVER.. IF WE WIN THIS GAME. Everyone I know is leaving or has left for LA this morning.

.yes, if we can keep it close in the Fourth........LOOK OUT!! Those guys on the field have already given 100% to get it to that point. Then the adrenaline X 1 kicks in.

Good everything to us.

Look at the positive side of this year’s success for the Patterson to Dykes hand-off—

In the big picture, the macro scale, Patterson will get some credit for this season’s success because of 24 years of building the program. Or 20 years for those who don’t give him any credit for 2018 forward; but keep in mind that Patterson and his staff did some good recruiting in those years as those recruits are now playing for the 2022 National Championship.

So putting this in a positive, and I think accurate, context — winning a CFP game this year is a great merger of the Patterson and Dykes’ eras. The first year of Dykes hitched to Patterson’s 24. If this had happened four years from now, that immediate tie could not be made. This is as good as it could be for Patterson after his dismissal, the best possible wrapping on this transition for Patterson and ALL involved.

With that in mind, if the Frogs win on Monday maybe there is an appropriate way to invite and include Patterson and the former staff to a celebratory festivity. Think of the players, maybe many or most of the players would appreciate the former staff being included sometime next week.

P.S. Missing the 2014 playoff was mostly due to bad luck—all the teams that mattered that year won in the last weekend and the Big XII did not have a championship game.

In the big picture, the macro scale, Patterson will get some credit for this season’s success because of 25 years of building the program. Or 20 years for those who don’t give him any credit for 2016 on. But guess what, the players he and his staff recruited during that period are now playing for the national championship. I heard that 85% of the players are his staff’s recruits.

So this is great for Patterson, the best possible wrapping on this transition for Patterson and ALL involved.

the majority are recruits brought by gary's staff and transfers, but sonny and his staff signed or brought in 28 new transfers and signings last year which is roughly 30% so that 85% isn't even close

as far as not giving them credit after 2016, you have the 2017 season and then the steady decline of the program punctuated with one of the worst defensive efforts by a gary patterson defense against smu in ft worth when the mustangs ran for 350 on the ground. please tell us what we aren't giving him credit for during that stretch?

gary made comments to players on this very roster that they were dogging it in an attempt to get him fired which wouldn't happen because he was untouchable and you think it is okay to have him in the locker room after the game win or lose?

how is that not a big scheiss you to those players who heard those comments, put up with those rants, trusted del conte and the admin to make the right decisions, trusted sonny to buy into how things will be different, put all this work in and then have gary back in the locker room?

It wasn't bad luck that kept us out. Was it luck that had us ranked No. 3 before that last week? No, it was the influence big shot teams like Ohio State had with the committee that actually moved us from No. 3 to No. 6 after we slammed our last opponent. Bad luck? No, not at all.

You’re trying too hard.

The fact that we are in this position is a complete and total indictment of the job GP did during the last years of his tenure.

I doubt GP gets any credit for this, nor should he.

Trust me Coach P doesn’t want to be a distraction or anywhere near the players before the game …let him sit in a donor’s box for the game then come down on the field to celebrate after our victory! We would not be in this position without Coach P and he absolutely deserves to be there!

It was posted in another thread, but I'll say the same thing. Coach P gave his life to our university for 30 plus. There is no one on here who can come anywhere near that and love him or hate him, you cant possibly be that dumb to not respect the guy if you are a true TCU fan. He needs to be apart of this next win and I think Sonny and the Donatis would agree. Not as a distraction, but at least as a support to the team. Coach P built this [ Finebaum ] even if Sonny took it and built it even better.
Hold on there, he left us with a three-year dumpster fire to try to fix. Which Sonny et al did.

If we win he really doesn’t need to be on the field to take away Sonny’s day and teams. If Sonny gives his blessing then fine .

It was a scheissing IMPLOSION in Waco that cost us in 2014...It was an insistence on passing when we were up big. It was not taking a timeout to give the defense a breather. It was poor clock management. It was a coaching failure. It MUST be GPs biggest regret as far as games go.

The fact that the busiest thread on KFC 3 days before we play for a national championship is about a former coach is bothersome. Still a fan of GP but the fact that he didn’t politely decline the interview request tells me what I need to know.
High profile. Thus the Ut employment, high visibility. Now this.

agree, if he is invited otherwise it would throw a shadow and I don't want that shadow on Gary.

The guy who deserves some kudos here is Donati. People here were [ Finebaum ]ting all over him for being spineless and weak before he had done anything when he was hired. 2022 saw more high performing sports from TCU than ever before.
You think Donati has anything to do with TCU Olympic sport success largely from athletes who committed and joined TCU before he became AD?

Yeah Donati totally has some impact on men’s tennis being top 10 (no that started during CDC)

[ What the heck? ]?

For sure the past few years he lost his fastball. But if he had made a smooth transition and not gone to UT, everyone would have been sad but understandable.

To basically fail for 3 years, then bail midseason just to show up in Austin - pretty crappy.
the way he left was crappy. No doubt he wishes a do over.

i dont get the anger over UT —— WE FIRED HIM! you cant fire someone and then control their vocational choice.

I apologize for being late to the party. When you live out of the state of Texas, sometimes it is hard to snag all the news. Did Gary Patterson get a divorce recently? Please help bring me up to date on this one. Thanks.
