  1. The old rule was defense wins championships and/or bowl games. Looks like what you need in college football is a great offense with a pretty good defense....not great, just good enough to get a couple more stops than the other team.
  2. It also looks to me like the team with the better OL won almost every bowl game. In many cases, the difference in OL's and point differential was extreme. The aggie QB was made much, much better by an OL that just whipped OU's DL big-time. I picked ND to win, but considering the reputation of the Alabama OL (despite inflation because they are a sacred SEC team), I fear 'Bama will win, it the trend continues. It's all in the OL, guys, not the play calling.

#1 is a shift in classic thought.

I don't know that #2 is anything new. Thinking back to the old classic pounding teams, it all went to the line.

The Man Behind The Curtain
Having the greatest defense in the history of the sport does you no good if the offense keeps going three and out, turns over the ball, or can't allow the defense to rest more than a few minutes. The offensive line is a huge factor in a lot of what our OC has been trying to do all season. If you look back at the games we won, like Baylor, you'll see the OL did a great job in creating a pocket, whereas the games we lost Boykin was constantly hurried, knocked down or sacked quickly. I have no doubt that Boykin is as great a QB as Manziel, but when you can't plant to throw or open up the pass with an efficient running game no QB can have success.

I have no doubt that Boykin will never be as good as Manziel regardless of who is blocking. To say his erratic passing was entirely on the OL is completely incorrect and unfair to the OL (yes they're bad.). He missed plenty of open receivers when he had time. It's completely delusional to compare a QB who may never start another game to one who just won the Heisman.

  1. No, that's what gets you to the Cotton Bowl. Championships are still about defense. Exhibit A is on ESPN this Monday night at 7:30.

Agree. Greatest season for aggy in 20+ years and they get a second tier bowl. Weren't they 2-2 versus teams with winning records this year before the bowl game? One was La Tech?

If you consider the Cotton Bowl a 2nd tier Bowl game, then what tier was the Chicken Wing Bowl we just played in? Cotton Bowl is not 'yet' a BCS Bowl, but it's not far behind. It in fact played in the best football facility currently in operation, better than any BCS Bowl venue. It most likely will be a member of the new elite 6 Bowls when things are finalized.

2nd tier as well, why do you ask? Cowboy Stadium is a nice facility, but far from the best place to play football.

What facility would you consider to be better than Cowboys Stadium"By far"? Just curious,
As far as Bowl Games, don't think many people consider Wing Bowl along same status as the Cotton Bowl. Just my opinion.Could be wrong.

I found it very interesting that A&M's average defense shut down OU, forcing two FGs instead of TDs in the first half and shutting out OU in the second half. If OU had been up 21-14 @ halftime and actually responded to JF in the 3rd quarter, then out would have been a different ballgame.

In spite of the greatness of JF, it was the A&M defense that won the game... and it is an average defense without depth.....maybe OU's last opponent gave a blueprint for stopping the offense. Or maybe Landry just wanted to finish his college career the same way he started it, with a loss at Cowboys Stadium

I put my money on ND to win. At +370 or so, it is a decent bet to make I think. Alabama probably wins 60% of the time but no meat on the bone there.

Sweet mother of God (notre dame), I sure hope they don't win. Much as I shudder at Alabama winning another NC , I much prefer it to Hypocrisy University.

I know the transitive property is suspect, but the team that was one missed field goal from dethroning ND just got pounded by Ole Miss...a team Bama beat pretty handily after the first half.

Never say never but it doesn't look good for the Domers.

If there are 3 tiers of bowl games, as seen by status, money, location and 'pick rankings', then Cotton and BWW (why must you continually call it the Chicken Wing bowl - it's just a sponsors name. Would it be better if it was the Built Ford Tough Bowl?) are 2nd tier.

As for the location, give me an outdoor football stadium over a dome or hybrid convention center atmosphere any day. Not a big fan of Cowboys Stadium, as the size eats up noise and the screen draws all eyes, all the time.

I think there are 6 tiers of bowls games:

NC game
Other BCS bowls
The Fringe bowls: Capital One, Cotton, Gator
The nice location bowls
The filler bowls
The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

Cotton Bowl played since 1937. Several 'classic' games and players have participated over the years.
Will most likely be a "Final 6 Bowl",or however they will be referred to starting when BCS goes away.
Buffalo Wild Wing Bowl been played since 1989.
Not trying to denigrate the BWW Bowl, but it does not compare historically to the Cotton Bowl,Sorry.
I was amused by the comment about Aggies being 'relegated' to a 2nd tier Bowl, that's all . Was wondering what that made TCU 'relegated to then" if Cotton Bowl was considered a step down to play in by some?

Yes Cotton was once a big bowl. It may be again. In 2012 it was 2nd tier.

We will just have to disagree on this one.
You and I both know TCU wasn't good enough this season to Play in the Cotton Bowl. You may think both BWW and Cotton Bowl are on same"2nd tier',but I don't see any 7-5 or 6-6 teams playing in the Cotton Bowl game.
