NBC 5: Heroin Use Probed in Death of T. Boone Pickens' Grandson

By Scott Gordon

Police are investigating the death of Thomas "Ty" Boone Pickens IV, the 21-year-old grandson of billionaire oilman T. Boone Pickens, as a possible drug overdose, two sources familiar with the investigation told NBC 5.

At least one witness told investigators that Pickens, a student at Texas Christian University, took the prescription drug Xanax and later injected heroin in the hours before he died, the sources said.

Pickens was pronounced dead Tuesday morning at Baylor All Saints Medical Center, where a friend brought him after saying he wouldn't wake up. He already may have been dead for several hours, the sources added. ...

Prayers for their family.

Not good news for TCU to be associated with. When I was at TCU alcohol was big, you might of seen marijuana here and there but none of these hard core drugs. Something is amiss at TCU and things need to change over there. This is not the kind of stuff I like to hear & read about and my alma mater being mentioned in.

It is going to happen. A school can't control personal choices. Pot, coke and even meth is one thing. Heroin, lord. Tragic. So sorry for the Pickens family.

Perhaps you could suggest what might be amiss at TCU that contributed to this tragedy.

You just weren't aware. I was at school a couple of decades ago and even then, there was more coke and ecstasy than you could shake a stick at.

It seems that heroin has become a very popular drug on college campuses. At least, it appears to be that way at New Mexico. I don't know why, but as I have learned from personal experience, it is a very tragic situation. I feel so sorry for this young man's family. I hope that his loss might somehow cause other kids to wake up and realize what a monster this drug is.

It has been happening a lot at TCU. TCU has been mentioned in too many of these big stories about drugs.

I suppose that TCU could begin refusing admission to all children of wealthy families with lots of disposable income and free time. These are the sorts of kids that consume lots of recreational drugs while enrolled in Westlake, Bowie, and Austin High Schools (Austin), and I wouldn't be surprised if it happened with kids in schools like Southlake Carroll or SA's Alamo Heights.

Two kids from Southlake Carroll died from overdoses about three weeks ago involving heroin, Xanax, alcohol, codeine and other drugs.

There have been some recent heroin death cases in our area crossing socio-economic lines. What a horrible drug to be addicted to.

There are worse drugs to be addicted to in terms of drug effects, effects on physical health, available treatments and withdrawal effects. WIthdrawal from heroin will not kill you although you might wish it did. WIthdrawal from some other drugs can without medical intervention.

There are worse forms of capital punishment other than lethal injection. There's firing squad, hanging, the electric chair, crucifixion, burning at the stake, buried alive. It's all relative.

To me there are not any worse than heroine! Had a nephew die at 22 with an over dose of heroine. He injected and knew automatically something was wrong. With a minor blood trail they figured he took at least 6 steps to the door and died! Recreational drugs can have the same effect on people that don't know they have a medical problem! People should try the high of just living and do exciting things instead of being stupid that last a short time.

Prayers to the family!

How serious is our drug problem?

It strikes me as somewhat odd considering all the glorification of alcohol on the board, how somber some get about other addictive drugs. The alcohol problems alone at TCU and among so many of its fans is frightening.

And pretty destructive personally, for them or their family. Too drunk and stupid to see it while bragging about their drinking.
