Name Your Head Coaching Candidates

I think what you are getting at that people here need to understand is that there are coaches like James Franklin that had a 30 Mil buyout and because VA Tech hired him, Penn state's buyout, was 9 Mil.

I don't think there are schools like Va Tech that will hire CSD. There may be a school in FCS or MAC that help to offset 300k or so. So off of CSDs buyout it might be chipping at permafrost.
I was thinking the opposite. Take Lincoln Riley as an example: USC fires him, and TCU hires him. USC still owes him $60 million, paid out over six years (just using round numbers). If TCU pays him $4 million per year, Riley effectively makes $10 million annually...$4 million from TCU and $6 million from USC.

Now apply that structure to TCU. Let’s say Sonny Dykes’ buyout is $25 million over five years and he isn’t hired elsewhere. TCU ends up paying $9 million per year for its head coach, plus whatever severance is owed to offensive assistants. They would at least save money on the defensive side by retaining AA and crew.

Does it make sense to go after an offensive minded fired coach with a huge buyout, that probably has an offset, as we navigate our own buyout, and keep our current DC to save money?
The most improved CFB coaches going into week 5. # 1 Jamey Chadwell at Liberty (according to data CFB guru Phil Steele) A coach I recommended earlier. He was making somewhere around 900k at Coastal. Liberty is paying him 4 Mil per annum. I certainly think he is worth paying CSD salary + 10%.

Now you guys/gals have to find an appropriate landing spot for the CEO.

I think you need to come up with another HC example other than Lincoln Riley. I have had 2 bosses and 1 eventual good friend from Clovis NM, Borger TX, and Muleshoe TX. Muleshoe land has an unusual culture that produces hyper inflated egos if they were playing in front of 2300 person crowds. My Borger Tx boss actually got his hands dirty from the time he was 10, just like me. He is still a friend because we have today respect for one another.

The Riley's OTOH stole signals (LINKY) and brother left on the eve of TCU NC.

Give a minute of thought if CGP took the DC position at USC because he was planning to inside saboteur.

I think it is still unlikely that he did, but more probable today than 6 mos ago.

Mike Norvell? Buyout is $45-50 million.

Wonder how long until we start seeing colleges negotiate head coach “trades” rather than firing and paying buyouts? Seems like it could be logical and benefit all parties. Sometimes it’s just about a fresh start. And since all most programs do is hire retreads fired from their last job seems it could save programs a lot of money.
The old my crap for your crap trade. Happens with NHL players a few times a year

I wouldn’t hate it. I think he could do well here.
he would do well in this conference. however, I'm not so sure he leaves SC if he can keep it to just 2 or 3 losses for the year. It's a new (and complicated - some may say over complicated defense) and he has had some injury bugs already this year.

Football is littered with the careers of assistant coaches who were great coordinators but flopped as head coaches. Probably the best examples of the Peter principle you can find.

Look at head coaches. At least an assistant who knows what is like to build a program. The assistant coaches at Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama have no idea what they are in for in the rest of the schools: 5* recruits who wont even talk is unknown to them.

Somewhere out there is another Cignetti waiting for his chance.

The guys at Montana and Montana State, Boise who are head coaches. Heck, go after a winning P4 coach.

Avalos is worth considering. His first stint as a HC didn't go as well as hoped, but perhaps he is ready for that second chance. He is here, a known commodity and his defense is playing very well. Could be GP 2.0.

Thoughts?
Agree, Avalos and his D have been rock solid.

If we lose to Baylor, Dykes should be fired then give avalos the interim tag and see what he can do in 6 games
