My son was accepted to TCU!

We are Jewish. He plays the trumpet and would like to continue playing in college. I don't think he has any interest in the military, but it may be something we investigate. He ultimately intends to go to medical school and become a cardiothoracic surgeon.

All of these can significantly reduce the overall price of TCU. Additionally, your (or wifes) employer may have a scholarship offer. He could get a job, and some employers offer tuition assistance, freeing up cash for other things.

Congrats. Tell him if he complains about parking, he will lose his car.

TCU has a great premed program. He has chosen wisely.

CT surgery is a dead field though. Everything moving to less invasive options. Vascular surgery is a good alternative. Of course, he has plenty of time to figure this stuff out!

If he has the scores you claim he does, he should probably get some pretty good scholarship... Maybe even a full ride... But parents like to exaggerate.

Congrats to him though! I need someone to pass the torch to. My sister got accepted as well. Not sure if she's going to end up being a Frog though :/

Hey Maniac, he got a 31 on his ACT as a Junior and a 34 when he got his Senior year results in November. Where is your sister thinking about going?

Congrats to your son! I'm not an alum, but my wife is a current grad student and I can say TCU has been first-class from the day she applied till now. Wonderful place.

There are still plenty of people that need heart surgery, vascular surgery and lung surgery. The less invasive options are being done by these surgeons.

Plenty of people need surgery, yes. But market is extremely saturated. Cariologists have pretty much taken most of the heart business. Vascular surgery is a much better option IMO.

Whoa. The military would be a great option for him. Free college AND med school. He could also be in a military band, rumored to be the best gig in the services.

haha.. that's impressive! hope he comes to TCU! Makes my degree look better ;)

And haha.. SHE wants to go TCU... Parents don't know if it's a good fit for her though.. Encouraging her to look else where just like they did with me. She's in the Top 4% of her class at Aledo, so she's already gotten into all of the school's she's applied to. Pretty much the typical- UT, A&M, Baylor, OU, OSU... She also applied to Kentucky... She does equestrian and thinks she would love living out there...Who knows where she'll end up

While a military band career might be the "best gig in the services", it's also a 99% enlisted career area. Each band has an officer in charge--but, his/her career potential is usually capped at Captain or Major.

Agree he should explore a ROTC scholarship, assuming he is physically/medically qualified and appropriately motivated to serve. I would highly recommend he look at the Air Force first--a high-tech service that places the greatest emphasis on quality-of-life issues. (Disclaimer: I'm a scholarship grad from the TCU AFROTC program...and enjoyed my 30+-year AF career.)

Also agree with the recommendation to look long and hard at the opportunities for med school via the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda MD.

I saw a little about military and skipped down to reply. If he is at all interested in being a military doctor for a few years go to an officer recruiter. Go to a 5 week cakewalk of training called officer development school in Newport Rhode Island. Best thing is, you are a commissioned officer before you leave and are getting paid to go to school. When you finish officer development school you will be commissioned as a lieutenant which is the equivalent of an army or marine captain, aka my boss. This is the navy route obviously, can't fathom why anyone would want to be any other branch but hey I might be a little biased. GO NAVY BEAT ARMY!!!!
