My reply to my UT friends wanting Gary (and automatically assuming he would never turn them down)

Ok, we all have UT fans as friends. Here's my Facebook reply to several of them clamoring for UT to hire Patterson:


I seriously doubt Patterson would go to UT anytime soon (not saying never). He's proud of what he's building in Ft. Worth. His wife is from Ft. Worth. He calls it home. They're building their dream house here. He KNOWS he can win a national championship here. And, I fully expect him to do so in the next 4-5 years.

He's a small town boy. He's paid VERY well- yes, other schools could offer more. But, TCU can match 99.9 % of those offers. Besides, his money isn't good in Ft. Worth anyway- he gets everything he wants- and he takes care of his assistants.

He has the facilities on par with every program out there. Yes, things are much bigger at other schools- including attendance at games. But, TCU is building a fan base. Fans are turning out slowly & surely. Amon Carter is an incredible place. Recruits love it.

And, everyone forgets one MAJOR thing. At TCU, he gets to coach 75% of the time. Yes, he helped raise the funds for the stadium. But, by and large, he left that to Del Conte. He spends his time coaching the players, not being CEO & filming 4 hours of TV shows a week.

As I said, he could certainly go to BIGGER schools. But he has built a legitimate program here by taking overlooked kids (like him- a walk on at Kansas State) and turning them into stars. He loves TCU for now. He enjoys the family atmosphere. He can retire here as a legend. I'm not saying he will- but he doesn't have to leave to get everything he wants. He can do it at the program he built.

So, hopefully that gives a little insight into why he's not leaving soon- if ever.

I'm anxious to watch the Frogs on my DVR today, but I'm waiting for ecto to come over and join me - plus, I want to watch LSU/Arkansas with my Tiger-daughter, this afternoon.

For this Frog/Texan fan yesterday was just about as good as it gets! Frogs beat Texas, Houston pulls a rabbit out of the hat to beat Detroit and the Cowboys lose to the Skins.

If only the Patriots had lost to the Jets to help the Texans secure a higher seed in the playoffs...

Oh, now I'm just gettin' greedy!

As much as I hate overrated/lucky/stanford did score/we need Pitt to miss a field goal to be undefeated/we have a weak schedule/t-shirt Notre Dame, I think I am glad they are fake No.1 because that will keep Kelly there for a long, long time. Patterson may go to ND if he ever leaves TCU (which I doubt he would ever do), but there is way too much BS at Texas for him. He don't need it, Texas fans. In fact, Texas now looks like a "no-win" situation for coaches. They will think twice about going to a place like that with unrealsitic expectations. I also think once a player gets to Austin, chasing women is more important than football. Why else does all that talent not win? Party over pain at UT.

But you just made a great case that not all of those things are good. Matter of fact, I'd say most aren't. Who wants to coach in a fishbowl where someone else makes decisions for you?

And UT fans assuming Patterson would love things there more than here are foolish too. They are foolish to think he'd love to do LHN tv shows, open practices to everyone, schmooze celebs, etc. They are also foolish to think we couldn't match the $5mil a year they'd throw at him.

So the way I see it, TCU has quite a few things to offer Patterson that UT can't match. And it's foolish to think otherwise.

I just tell people to look at Urban Meyer. When things were looking like a tough stretch at FL (I lived in GA at the time, there is TONS not reported here), he 'got sick' and quit to spend time witht he family. That lasted 2 months and he was working for espn. That lasted for a few months and he went to osu, (must be feeling better, or family got tired of his azs) with nothing but upside. Winning in a weak b10 this year, with nowhere to go, and no expectations. A diluted legacy, for sure.

Something else: The Texas job is not as attractive as it was two years ago. For one thing, A&M lucked out with a perfect storm by joining SEC(where everyone can ovrcommit and oversign), and hiring Sumlin, and is on more of a par with UT than anytime in 40 years. For another, there are no fleas on TCU, which bids to be a bigger and bigger player in the Lone Star Sweepstakes; and Tech and Baylor are both better than in times past.

I dont think hes going anywhere anytime soon. We offered him 2.5 a year before we gave Dabo the job and he asked for 3 mil plus incentives and that was before he won the Rose Bowl for you guys. I like Dabo but sometimes I wish we would matched what he wanted to actually see if he would have left. Dudes a great coach for sure.
