MSU Offense Breakdown

Our offense is certainly offensive. At times we've contemplated moving our OC Dan Roushar to DC, because he's an expert at making sure offensive drives stall.

QB Andrew Maxwell - Obviously quite a dropoff from our 3 year captain/starter/savior Kirk Cousins, but it hasn't all been his fault. Maxwell hasn't been great this season, but his surrounding corps hasn't helped much either. He tends to get flustered under pressure quickly and make poor decisions. Has a rocket arm, but too much so. Sometimes doesn't show touch on his passes and will overshoot his receivers. He's played through some injuries but he should be 100% for the bowl. Not a dual threat, but has a little mobility to extend plays (which we haven't really seen too much of this year). Probably quite overmatched going up against Verrett and co.

RB Le'Veon Bell - This dude is a hoss. 6'2 240lbs, incredibly agile for his size. He can hurdle people (ask Boise State, Notre Dame, and Indiana), has a devastating stiff arm, and his spin move is amazing. He runs with incredible power and tends to drag smaller players with him. Biggest knock on him is the lack of top end speed. Won't be winning any footraces but he is an elite back. Good receiver out of the backfield and pretty steady in pass protection as well.

FB Lawrence Thomas/Niko Palazeti - Palazeti was the starter at the beginning but has been injured a lot. LT was a 5-star linebacker recruit who quickly outgrew the position and injuries have prevented him from being a contributor on the defensive line (his ultimate position). LT is 6'3 295lbs and is a great lead blocker for Bell. Palazeti is also an effective blocker at about 250lbs when healthy. Both of them are good blockers and LT is also a good receiver out of the backfield.

The combination of Bell and LT tends to wear defenses down over the course of the game. 2-3 yard gains in the 1st turn to 5-6 yard gains by the 4th quarter.

LT Dan France - Converted from DT last year due to injuries. Has had some concussion/knee injuries this year too. Mediocre overall, overmatched against good DEs. Surprisingly held Jarvis Jones in check last year against Georgia but he's going to get abused by Fields/Mponga imo.

LG Blake Treadwell - Came in about halfway through the season after dealing with injuries for the past 1.5 years. Added a big boost in run blocking and has been decent in pass pro.

C Jack Allen - Redshirt freshman, received rave reviews in practice. Started the year at LG but was overmatched. He has been pretty good at center since our original starting C was lost for the season. Not great but not terrible.

RG Chris McDonald - 3 year starter at LG on this line. Steady presence overall.

RT Skyler Burkland - Came in once we lost our senior RT Fou Fonoti for the season. He's been ok so far. Broke his leg vs. ND last year and was very rusty coming back in. He's also not that great and will be overmatched vs. your DEs.

WR corps - You'll see (likely) Bennie Fowler, Keith Mumphery, Aaron Burbridge, Tony Lippett. None of them are great. There's some speed but none are true burners. Drops have been a huge issue, and they sometimes struggle to get separation against good DBs. Mumphery is more of a possession guy, Burbridge is probably the fastest of the group (true frosh). Lippett is a dual threat who was a hs QB so he will be used sometimes in wildcat/end arounds. Fowler is the oldest and most experienced WR of the group.

TE Dion Sims - Huge receiving target (6'5 280) with big soft hands. 3rd down safety valve and a mismatch for corners. Decent speed for his size, decent blocker too. Missed some games with injury but should be 100% now.

Nice write-up... thanks. Looks like you have a relatively similar offense to ours. Your line looks better than I've heard, although weakness at the OT spot is troubling. Do y'all throw deep very often?

I'll go ahead and give my breakdown of the offense... I'm sure I'll be corrected and argued with. In general, our OLine is not very good, our QB is young and those two things make you want to drink heavily watching our passing game. Because of this we have to run the ball a lot with RBs, QB and WRs. And punt the ball. Our best asset on offense are our WRs, but we don't really use them anymore.

QB - Trevone Boykin (R. Freshman). He became our starter beginning game 5 against Iowa State after the police frowned upon our potential Heisman candidate partaking in Wasted Wednesdays. Boykin is small, listed at 6 2", but 6 1" at best. He has an extremely funky delivery... kind of like Tebow but [ Finebaum ]tier. Has a cannon for an arm though... when he gets time (3+ seconds) and space (5+ yards) to throw it's a missile and pretty accurate. Unfortunately, when he doesn't have time or space (most of the time), those missiles are often as accurate as a North Korean nuke... you have no idea where those puppies are going. He's got some pretty decent wheels but has been banged up. Being a freshman he hasn't learned to slide or how to best avoid contact when he decides to take off and run. That being said, if the defense gets over aggressive he can make you pay with his scrambling ability.

RB - Matthew Tucker (senior) Big back, but may possibility be hurt. Has had a great career at TCU and I've really enjoyed watching him. Doesn't have top end speed, but is definitely faster than Bell-Dozer (MSU style). He is a pretty good receiver out of the backfield, and probably doesn't get enough recognition in that regard. He's not going to make you think you're watching Adrian Peterson but he is useful.

RB - BJ Catalon (freshman) Small back, very fast, quick, shifty. Often misses cuts due to experience but overall a reliable back. If he gets some space, watch out.

LT - Tayo FAbuluje (sophomore) A mammoth of a man... has been getting better all year but still shows poor footwork oftentimes. Fortunately his size can make up for some of his deficiencies in technique and quickness. This is his first year playing college football, he is basically a freshman. Also, he sometimes switches to RT.

LG - Eric Tausch (junior) A guy who can move anywhere along the line and is a reliable utility player on the OLine. That being said, he's not an elite player and has plenty of moments where he gets beat badly. He's not a big guard, under 300 lbs.

C - James Fry (senior) A solid player, not going to blow you out of the water, but gets the job done most of the time.

G - Blaize Foltz (senior) A good player, has been starting for at least a year I believe. I had hoped he would be a monster on the field but has had his fair share of penalties and getting burned. That being said, he's probably the best player on the OLine.

RT - Aviante Collins (freshman) - all kinds of potential here. This kid could be an NFL starter one day. He is extremely quick with great feet but is still learning. He has plenty of moments of getting burned and can be beat. His biggest problem is penalties... false starts and late hits are a specialty of his. You can pretty much count on 20 yards of penalties right now.

WR - Josh Boyce (junior) this guy is probably our best player. He isn't huge, but is lightning fast, and extremely strong. Has pretty good hands, occasional dropsies. He is a nightmare if we can get him the ball. We can't

WR - Brandon Carter (sophomore) Incredible athlete here. He is small but lightning and has better hands than pretty much any WR I've seen. Unbelievably dangerous if we can get him the ball. We can't.

WR - LaDarius Brown (freshman) big WR at 6 4" and 220 and probably the fastest WR we have, although it takes him a little while to get going. Has good hands, still learning the game but has potential to be a 1st round draft pick. He is scary good if we can get him the ball. We can't.

WR - Skye Dawson (senior) here and there. Small receiver but was a track star so he's got plenty of wheels. Has a major case of the dropsies although is better than most give him credit for. Should we ever find him in space, he is dangerous. We don't.

Lol, watching these two offenses is gonna be like playin cards with my brother's kids!

P.S. good write-ups by both of you. Jake, I didn't know you had that in you...

Problem with Skye Dawson is that, while he is so fast, for some reason he never really breaks a big one. We're famous for running him on fly sweeps that gain 2-3 yards most of the time. Occasionally he'll get 5-7 yards, but not often. He's pretty reliable in the passing game, but we rarely throw to him on a deep fly or post route as you might think would happen with a receiver of his speed.

Nice write up Jake. Pretty much 100% on target.

And thanks to our MSU visitors again for another great & informative thread. It's been fun having y'all on our board.

I don't think you dogged your receivers enough (LOL), but otherwise I think you hit the nail on the head 'Max. I really like Dion Sims and I'm wondering who we are going to use to cover him. Thanks to the Big 12 we rarely ever see tight ends, much less quality TEs. Our LBs are very small; he'll have 40-50 pounds on them.

Personally I'm more interested in your thoughts on the defense. For as much talent as they have up front, I'm shocked their sack total is so low. Seems like William Gholston inherited the inconsistent motor gene from his cousin Vernon.

Great job Jake. You forgot to include our offensive new weapon Jordan Moore. I have literally no idea what he'll do against MSU but my guess is that he will be involved in a big play for us at some point. Not sure why but I have this feeling he's going to be awesome..

good call cds

FB Jordan Moore (freshman) -- is he safety? is he a linebacker? is he a tailback? is he a fullback? Nobody darnin knows! but hes big (6 3") and incredibly fast, possibly the most athletic guy on the team overall. We have no idea if he will be on offense, defense, or plsying first base but hes going to do something

Good writeups. Methinks the kicking game will be critical in this game, for field position and for field goals. Also, getting first downs and keeping the other team's defense on the field long enough to get tired may be important. I look for both teams to run the ball, throw short passes, and punt a lot.

They have been maddeningly inconsistent. We graduated our top 3 WRs last year.
Between drops, poor routes, and fumbles, these new guys have not been up to snuff. They've improved since the beginning of the year (where they nearly gifted Boise State the game) but still haven't been that great. That said, we don't really have a #1 receiver, they're all fairly equal. So Verrett will lock down one but the others aren't really a dropoff (although it remains to be seen if they're even good enough to take advantage of your 3rd string corners).

I like the Sims matchup, it's a type of TE that's not seen too often in the Big 12. Our 295lb fullback Thomas can also catch out of the backfield and has good athleticism for his size (former 5-star linebacker recruit....outgrew that by a bit).

The sack total is low because we miss Jerel Worthy. He was a disruptive pass-rusher in the front and got incredible penetration. That freed up Gholston and blitzing OLB Denicos Allen (10 sacks last year, maybe 2 this year) to make plays, but this year they haven't had that. However, Worthy would sometimes overpursue, leading to big runs. The new DTs have stopped the run VERY well. Our run stats are skewed due to DEs sometimes losing contain for mobile QBs (not often, but Taylor Martinez comes to mind). Nobody has been able to run up the middle against us, and I don't see it changing now.

Thank God the play TCU runs 95% of the time, the zone read, is tricky and unpredictable as hell and you never know the craziness that will ensue. Seems like a good match-up for us.

We're generally not bad at defending dual threat QBs. The ones that give us trouble are the bigger guys (Braxton Miller-types) who are also elusive. Martinez inexplicably had some huge runs against us this year.
