MSU Defensive Breakdown

DC Pat Narduzzi - One of the best in the country. His name has been thrown around for HC vacancies the last few years. Texas A&M tried to throw a bunch of money at him last year to be a DC there. He got a raise at MSU and stayed put. Very fiery guy, passes it to his defense. Runs a base cover 4 with a 4-3 front 7 that utilizes a 3-tech DT and a NT. 3rd and long package is a 3-3-5 "Delta" formation with 3 pure pass rushers at the line. Very blitz-heavy scheme although I feel like we have blitzed less this year and had much less pass-rushing presence in general.

DEs:

William Gholston (6'7 280lbs) - Athletic freak, projected by some as a 1st round pick this year. Has had a very underwhelming year though, as he has been the focal point on the DL without someone like Jerel Worthy next to him. Not terrible, but hasn't lived up to expectations. However, he has the length and power to be dominant. Does a very good job at knocking down passes.

Marcus Rush (6'2 250lbs) - Underrated DE. Good pass rusher and also pretty good in run D. He had a breakout year as RS-FR last year but like the rest of our pass rush has not been great this year. Not the same kind of athletic freak that Gholston is, but probably more sound technique-wise. Both he and Gholston can also drop into coverage from time to time, since both of our DEs have somewhat of a 3-4 OLB build.

Backups: Shilique Calhoun, Denzel Drone - Drone is a junior, Calhoun is a RS-FR. Both are pretty solid, nothing special. Not a huge dropoff when they come in, which is pretty often. Drone sometimes will also play the nose in the 3-3-5 Delta package.

DTs
---

Anthony Rashad White (6'2 330lbs) - The boulder of our D-line. Extremely unsung throughout the year. He had big shoes to fill, replacing 2nd round pick Jerel Worthy who was a pass rushing phenom and extremely disruptive at the center of the line. White, however, isn't much of a pass rusher. He's a wall against the run. So far this year, nobody has done much up the gut against this front 7, and White is a big reason why. He ties up blockers to keep the LBs clean and does a damn good job of it. However, doesn't get much push to collapse the pocket.

James Kittredge (6'4 272lbs) - Transfer from Vanderbilt, first year playing at MSU. Probably the best pass rusher of the group but that's not saying much considering our DTs haven't been too disruptive. Kittredge is also quite solid against the run. Needs to add more bulk but he's been pretty effective this year.

Micajah Reynolds (6'5 318lbs) - He's been flipped between DT, OG, and OT more times than I can count. Stayed at DT this whole year though. Better pass rusher than White, but he's also good at knocking down passes at the line. Stout against the run as always.

Tyler Hoover (6'7 310lbs) - Used to play DE in 2010, injured early in 2011 and didn't play the season. He's also more of a pass rush DT but again hasn't made a huge impact. Long arms which are useful for batting down passes. Strangely enough, the long arm swim move hasn't really worked, but at the same time he hasn't gotten dominated by the shorter OGs either.

We rotate all of our DL very frequently so you'll see different matchups. They generally tend to be fairly fresh considering there's a full 2-deep for nearly every spot on the DL.

Will have linebackers/secondary up soon.

Thank you for the information Max. However I think it might be a little too much. Obviously I didn't have to read your analysis but I did.

It was very detailed but maybe a tad too much info. Thanks though.

Strongside OLB ("SAM"): Denicos Allen (5'11 225lbs) - Had a breakout season last year as a pass rusher with 10 sacks in his first year starting. This year, without interior pressure (i'm sensing a theme here) he has had a much more underwhelming year. That said, he has improved his pursuit angles and is a better tackler. There's less pass rush, but he is a more complete LB. Formerly a HS safety, so he has good speed for a LB and can cover edge to edge.

Middle LB ("MIKE"): Max Bullough (6'3 252lbs) - Prototype Big Ten thumper. Extremely intelligent with elite instincts. Has a nose for the ball and is a sound tackler. Good blitzer, and has gotten a lot better this year at shedding blocks. He's the latest player from an illustrious Spartan family that goes back several generations (his younger brother Riley is an OLB that is redshirting this year, and their youngest brother Byron is a safety that is a verbal for the 2014 class). Bullough is also the captain of the defense, he has complete knowledge of the scheme and will frequently check into or out of blitzes and different formations after reading the offense.

Weakside OLB ("STAR"): Taiwan Jones (6'3 230lbs) or Chris Norman (6'1 233lbs) - Norman is a 3rd year starter who is a senior and a captain. The STAR position is somewhat of a hybrid S/LB position, but more accurately described as a LB spot which requires more coverage. Norman is athletic and has a good knowledge of the scheme. Has good speed for edge pursuit but sometimes can get tied up in blockers. He's had injury issues before but overall has been a very good starter for 3 years. Lo and behold true sophomore Taiwan Jones, unheralded by recruiting services, but was the only player of our 2011 class who did NOT redshirt. This year, he's gotten even better and midway through the year has displayed Norman as a starter. Both will play substantial minutes. Norman has more experience, but Jones is a physical freak who has been stellar this year.

No problem. This is mostly for people who'd like a more in-depth look. I might post more of a quick-hitter type of overview of our team sometime for the more casual football fan.

Good info and thanks for posting. Just ignore billups, unless you need tickets to a TCU game.

Gholston is a monster. And Rush... About the best name for a DE as you can get! I haven't had a chance to watch much Sparty ball the last couple years... Do y'all still run a base 4-3?

Rush is a great name for a DE. Gholston certainly has the tools to be an elite DE but he needs to get it all together.

We still do run a base 4-3, but we blitz frequently from both the linebacker, corner, and safety spots and on occasion we will drop our DEs into coverage.

And how about the D Backs?

Typical Big 10 team, size wise. Kinda' like Wisconsin in the Rose. Their defense is plenty tough tho, and I doubt we will run it much on them. This game may be a lot like the Boise game, who had a terrific front seven. Throw the ball, will be the theme.

On offense, MSU will see more speed, than they have ever seen in the Big 10. I think we dominate them defensively. Their QB, better be watchin' his blind side. The big RB might be a little effective much like Line, but I doubt it... The TCU front 4 is flat out good.

I'm not sure of it but I think these might be the biggest defensive linemen our guys have faced this year. I predict at least the accustomed number of false starts.

Size wise, sure. Their OL is bigger and far better than ours. However, this D is way faster and more athletic than Wisconsin's. Not even close to being the same kind of D, imo. We try to wall off the line of scrimmage with our DTs and then use our DBs in run support along the edges along with the linebackers. The LBs are responsible for covering the flats so quick passes to the flats work well.

I expect TCU's D to be similar to UGA's last year (4-3 rather than 3-4, though). That UGA team had a phenomenal D with speed and power across every position and we only won that game due to some great plays that our defense made. Wouldn't be surprised to see the same thing here.

Bigger =! Better

But yeah this front 7 is pretty legit. Arguably better than last years from at least a run D standpoint.

Johnny Adams (5'11 177bs) - Was a lockdown corner last year, but got burned a few times early this year. Still among the upper echelon of corners in the country. Frail, but plays very physically and is great in run support. He's fast and a very good cover corner. Tends to trash talk a lot, even after giving up big plays, which is annoying. Overall, he's a very good corner (3rd year starter) who I feel is somewhat unfairly picked on by MSU fans. Has given up a few big plays, but our scheme leaves corners on an island for the majority of the game.

Darqueze Dennard (5'11 188lbs) - Junior corner, this year he came out of Adams's shadow. Another "complete corner" as our DB coach calls them, Dennard is very good in pass coverage and also big in run support. Had a huge bowl game last year with 2 picks off Aaron Murray (1 pick six) and made some big plays against Boise this year too. He also had a huge INT returned for a TD against Nebraska which got called back for a foul. Sometimes will get caught being too aggressive trying to jump a route, but generally he's been solid.

Safeties
-----
Isaiah Lewis (5'10 205lbs) - Had a breakout season last year as our SS. This year he has regressed. He's a huge hitter, to the point of sometimes he doesn't wrap up. He's been okay in coverage but got toasted by some smaller slot guys sometimes. However, he's huge in run support (2nd on the team in tackles, the only DB in the top 6 I believe). Can be too aggressive but generally he's been ok. Pretty good ballhawk, like all of our DBs.

Kurtis Drummond (6'1 200lbs) - Took over at FS after our senior FS Trenton Robinson was drafted by the 49ers last year. Drummond has been very good, no dropoff at all. Solid in run support, ballhawk in coverage. He has the bulk to take on bigger WRs and the footspeed to keep up with pretty much anyone.

RJ Williamson (6'0 205lbs) - Redshirt freshman, primarily will come in as the nickel on passing downs, but sometimes will give Drummond or Lewis a breather. Very fast, and probably the best cover guy of the bunch. He has a nose for the ball and seems to make plays (check out his pick vs. Boise). He's still young so liable to get burned sometimes but he hasn't shown any dropoff from Drummond/Lewis so far.

Dantonio is a former DB and a DB coach by nature. He also was the DC for Ohio State's 2002 National Championship team. So far over the last 3 years, we have replaced DBs almost seamless, with either no dropoff or a considerable improvement. His eye for talent, especially on the defensive end, is superb (Dennard was a 2-star recruit out of GA who played as a true frosh, Bell was also a 2-star out of OH who played as a freshman).

We actually run a 4-2-5. Looks like Jake really needs to do a D breakdown.....

I realized that after I posted it and I was halfway downstairs...but at that point I was too lazy to come fix it.

I'm glad we played Boise early this year, since they also ran a 4-2-5, although the personnel are considerably different.
