MLIve: Michigan State OC Dan Roushar explains Spartans' trick plays, including biggest gainer of game

TEMPE, Ariz. — Michigan State's longest offensive play in its Buffalo Wild Wings victory was not of the conventional variety.

In fact, it was a play designed by the much-criticized Spartans' offensive coaching staff after hours of studying TCU on film.

The play, a 29-yard pass from tailback Le'Veon Bell to fullback TyQuan Hammock, came on a third-and-2 at the Horned Frogs' 45-yard line and set up the Spartans' first touchdown in their 17-16 win Saturday night.

Bell took the snap out of the Wildcat formation, and after taking two steps toward the line as though he was going to run, Bell dropped and lobbed a pass to a wide-open Hammock, who had slipped through the line and into the middle of the field. ...

Not sure how I feel about this... Either we're getting better at obscuring tendencies or the MSU offensive coaching staff is quite inefficient.

The fact that we allowed a team to score enough points to beat using only one trick play and one fumbled punt return at the 4 yard line is less of a statement about our D and special teams, and more of a statement about our lack of ability of this year's O to get the ball in the endzone. Score a couple more TDs instead of making FGs and nobody is even talking about this. Should be fixed next year with reinforcements at RB and possibly QB next year. The O played with 1 hand tied behind its back all year.

Fixed it for you. As the article points out they tried other trick plays but they didn't work because TCU stopped them dead in their tracks...

Roushar shook his head when asked about Michigan State's other trick play, one that went horribly wrong on a first-and-10 at the Spartans' 24-yard line in the second quarter.
On that play, Bell took a handoff from quarterback Andrew Maxwell and passed the ball back to Maxwell who had a TCU defensive end in his face. Maxwell saved a huge loss by throwing the ball away before he could be sacked for a double-digit loss.

The Spartans' second play of the game also involved trickery, as the team broke the huddle quickly and came out with four receivers to one side, including Bell.
Maxwell got a quick snap and threw immediately to Bell, but the play only gained 1 yard on account of the MSU receivers inability to make open-field blocks on TCU's defensive backs.

Trick plays only get the attention around here when they work against us. or maybe its just that when there is a big play we figure it must be a "trick."

But wait, our fans don't believe in trick plays as they are overrated.

For some good giggles read the "comments" section, after the article.

If you think Texans are obsessed with calling their rivals by demeaning nicknames check out one MSU fan's references to "The University of Ann Arbor," and "Ohio."
