MLive: Michigan State football ready to play catch-up in bowl preparations

By Mike Griffith | [email protected]

EAST LANSING — Ask any coach in any sport, and they will be quick to tell you that preparation is the cornerstone for success.

The TCU football program that Michigan State will play at 10:15 p.m. on Dec. 29 in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl is one of just three teams in the nation (Florida, Utah) to win at least six bowl games over the past seven seasons.

The Horned Frogs (7-5) are a 2.5-point favorite over the Spartans (6-6) to make it seven bowl wins in eight years, but coach Gary Patterson isn't taking anything for granted. ...

Last year, with the extra week spent on the Big Ten Championship Game, we didn't spend much time in terms of player development (which we usually do during bowl week) and spend more time preparing for UGA, I believe. This time we are going to revert to spending plenty of time on player development as well.

One of the comments on that story is hysterical - that Boise had a slight drop-off this season. Not trying to disrespect Sparty by saying this, but 2012 Boise is a shadow of what it's been. They maintained their ranking this year because of respect for past seasons and because the current MWC is ridiculously weak.

Boise 2012 is not a good team. Good defense, meh offense. Our game with them should not have been as close as it was. We had nearly a 2:1 TOP advantage and outgained them by 250+ total yards, including 176 on the ground. We didn't allow a single defensive TD and one of their FGs was due to a turnover in MSU territory. That game was horrible. Lippett literally bobbled a pass into the hands of a CB, the pick six was a drop by the RB on a screen which bounced straight up to Ioane. So many chances that were blown in that game.

However, MSU 2012 is arguably an even worse team than Boise.

HA! Any correlation?

"In fact, TCU will hold it's third bowl practice today, its fourth on Friday and a fifth on Sunday, while Michigan State will be holding its second practice on Friday and third on Saturday before taking Sunday off.

Spartans coach Mark Dantonio is 1-4 in bowl games since taking over at Michigan State, however, it appears he found the winning formula last year."

Could be. Worst loss was Bama and I don't think there was any way we were going to win that game.
