EAST LANSING — The Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl is projected to be the lowest scoring of all the bowl games according to the Las Vegas oddsmakers, with an over/under of 42 points.

But TCU coach Gary Patterson said he's not so sure that's how things will work out when the Horned Frogs (7-5) play Michigan State (6-6) at 10:15 p.m. on Dec. 29 in Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

"When you go into a bowl game, I've always said you've got to be careful what you wish for and talk about,'' Patterson said, "because it usually changes when you give two teams a month to prepare for a ball game.''

The Spartans had their first bowl practice on Saturday and will take this week off before beginning preparations in earnest this coming Saturday.

Coach Mark Dantonio believes Michigan State isn't as boring of a football team to watch as some might suggest. ...

I get the sense from reading this article that both coaches are trying to get some interest in this game and help sell some tickets!

Idk about how well Michigan State's offense will do, but I think we'll score more than we did against UT, Kstate, and OU. That is to say, I think we'll score between what we did against Tech and West Virginia. High 30s to low 40s. Granted, I think some of that will come from special teams/defense.

I think we'll have more speed than them and will break some big plays.

Dantonio sure is giving his team alot of time off. Isn't there a limit to how many practices you can have before a bowl game? I know there are so many one team can have up until first game. I don't think CGP would give the team that much time as Mark D. is doing at MSU.

ANY Big 12 and/or Texas team has "more speed" than any Big 10 team. They still play like it's the 80s. Or earlier.

"We've seem glimpses of film on TCU already, very exciting offense,'' Dantonio said. "They have a quarterback that creates, outstanding wide receivers and an athletic offensive line. I'm sure they will be difficult to stop."

I get the feeling Dantonio has been watching our film from a couple years ago. Though TB can make plays and our WRs are amazing, our OL has been a little rough around the edges and our offense has been mainly vanilla.

Although that was also perhaps their best team in decades.

That said, I wouldn't take cliches about Texas vs. Big XII team speed to the bank. MSU's defense doesn't seem to have struggled at any point in any game all year. To hold every team they've faced to such low output, all while getting no offensive help at all, is difficult to do. We should know better than anyone that it takes a legitimately excellent defense to hold 12 offenses in check, regardless of who the other team may be.

My early prognostication is TCU 17-12 Sparty.

Too low. If that's all we score we had a really bad day. Really bad. I also expect them to score some (at least field goals) due to us giving them great field position on several occasions. (Bad punts, int, fumble, something)

Teams we have scored 31 points on this season during the regulation 60 minutes: Baylor, Texas Tech. [The former being the league's worst defense and the latter requiring a miraculous 10-point comeback in the final three minutes.]

Teams Sparty has allowed to score 31 points this season: N/A

OU gave up 50 in back to back overtime games. If you count overtime game final scores, we averaged 31.58 points this year. Numbnuts.

With a full month to prepare I expect both offenses to be able to score more than their average during the season.

Indiana put up 27. Just saying.

The only real offensive threat they faced was Ohio State. They did a great job in that game. I admit. I'm not saying they are a bad defense. I'm just saying that I think our offense is underrated because of the conservative approach the coaches have taken, and I think our special teams/defense are going to put up some points. With a full month to prepare, they won't have to be as conservative, and our defense should be in top form.

After watching the 2012 Horned Frog offense for the last three months it feels like 31 is the new 50. We never once had our way for 60 minutes against a vaguely decent defense, and struggled to do much against several quite poor ones. I just don't see that changing after three weeks of extra practice against an elite Sparty unit. I very much hope that I am wrong and you are right.

I really don't see MSU scoring against this D...of course if we are held to 3rd and long, I don't see the Frogs scoring either...end of regulation will be 0-0...

Indiana caught us sleeping. Not an excuse, but they used their quick tempo short passing game to perfection. Indiana actually has a great offense, it's just that their defense is awful. Kind of the opposite of MSU.

Indiana scored 0 points in the second half, punted on 5 out of 6 drives and lost a fumble on the last one, and gained 46 total yards in the 2nd half.

The D is susceptible to some early strikes and tends to give up easy touchdowns, but our DC Narduzzi is one of the best in the business and will make adjustments.
