MLive: Michigan State football coach Mark Dantonio believes Spartans are inches from greatness

EAST LANSING — The record says one thing, but Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said another during his show at Reno's East on Thursday night.

"I told our guys before the SEC Championship Game, I said, `Do you guys realize that we beat Georgia last year in the Outback Bowl (33-30), and now they are one game away from playing for the national championship?'

"We're not that far away form having that kind of success.''

The Spartans finished the regular season 6-6 and will play TCU (7-5) at 10:15 p.m. on Dec. 29 at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz., in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. ...

What they always omit is the MSU won games closely, too. One three-point and 2 4-point wins. Two 16 point wins. Beat Central Michigan (MAC 6-6) by 35.

Basically played good defense, not so good offense.
