MLive: Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio bristles at notion bowl unimportant to underdog Spartans

By Mike Griffith | [email protected]

EAST LANSING — TCU has opened as a one-point favorite over Michigan State in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, and the line has already jumped to 2 1/2, an indication that early bettors are putting their stakes in the Horned Frogs.

TCU (7-5) is 5-7 against the spread this season, while the Spartans (6-6) are 4-8 against the spread heading into their 10:15 p.m. Dec. 29 game at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.

It's worth noting, however, that in the only two games Michigan State was not favored in, at Michigan (+8.5) and at Wisconsin (+5), the Spartans covered the line.

Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio, 1-4 in bowl games leading the Spartans, squashed any notion that his team would take the bowl game lightly. ...

MSU reminds me of the Iowa State bowl game in that all of their losses have been by just a few points and they have an outstanding defense. That game had us favored by 3 1/2 initially, but went down to 1 1/2 by game time. It was a very hard fought game, decided when Ballard airs it out and the defense shuts Iowa State down.

I think this team has the heart to win another tough fight, but thanks to all the members of that team that beat Iowa State 27-24 that year in Reliant Stadium. It was a heck of a game.

Thoroughly enjoyed that game as well. Recall being thoroughly impressed with how many fans from ISU came down. I don't remember anything at all about the spread for the game but I recall distinctly that it took longer to drive from Reliant to The Woodlands than it did to drive from The Woodlands to Aledo after the game.

Dantonio is a fellow Gamecock alum, so I generally pull for him. His teams have a lot of similarities to Patterson's squads as far as tough D and a solid run game, etc. Not a lot of flash, but capable of beating most anybody if the chips fall the right way. That said, Go Frogs!

We had front row seats right behind the TCU bench for that game. What about our "inconsistent long distance" fg kicker, Peter LaCoco from Nolan Catholic drilling a 50 yard FG to win the game?

I enjoy your perspective as an outsider/adopted fan. How'd you enjoy the TCU season? Did you make many games? I seem to remember you making one comment that I thought was interesting (believe it was about our fan base) and would like to hear a little more on your overall take on TCU football (the team, atmosphere, etc...).
