When Buddie arrived at West Point in 2019 after four years as the AD at Furman, he encountered a different world of fundraising and project funding to the one that exists around most NCAA athletic departments. The Army West Point Athletic Association, the nonprofit operating Army athletics and giving it some separation from the U.S. government, was only 2 years old. Some of West Point’s athletics budget comes from government funding, but 100% of the money for a facility project had to be raised by donors and the athletic department before it could commence. Not one penny of government money would go to the Michie Stadium project.
“Most places I’ve been, there is some formula that if you have 25% in hand and 80% pledged, you can go ahead and start,” Buddie said.
