23 yards of vertical passing unless my math is off. Instead, we run the same 1st down play we ran all game, then threw it laterally

The playcalling should come as no surprise to anybody. It has been rough in the red zone all season.

It was a bit toungue in cheek; the point is that close the options are more limited. I'm OK not throwing three times into the endzone. Sometimes the best plays in the red zone are runs or short passes that prevent you from a third or fourth and long that are low prob conversions, or maybe even score on. OU played good D on both those plays.
Anyone else see Boyce trying to wake up his hands on the third down play. I wonder if that contributed to his drop on the fourth down play. Would have been a tough catch because the DB was scrapign through, but went right through his hands before the scrape.

Boyce's hands (or anything else of Boyce) didn't cause the incompletion. It wasn't a drop. The defender put a fist through the ball and Boyce's hands and knocked it away.
A legitimate holding call and a good defensive play sealed TCU's fate. The impulse to whine is understandable...don't indulge.

It was great to see Boykin be able to get enough time to throw long - at first he didn't have the time, but it seemed that as we started running pretty well, things loosened up for the longer passes.
It seems that the coaching staff will let Boykin throw outside, and downfield when protection allows, but at all comfortable with him throwng over middle/mid-range passes in the middle of the field.

I'll have to watch it again, but I thought it first went through his hands. The announcers basically said the same thing.
Now, if he did get his hands around it, the defender likely swipes it out, but it looked to me like the ball was loose before the swipe action.

But that strategy wasn't working all day!! I understand that we want to run it on 1st and 2nd to keep it 3rd and under 5, but the exact opposite was happening all day. Every time we tried this strategy it resulted in 3rd and 8+... no different here.

Do with that, rather than those first two passes to Catalon, they has tried at least once a fade patter to LD Brown. Maybe that pass is not one of Boykin's best yet.

Honestly, the idea of Boykin throwing it over the middle into an 7-8 man goal line zone defense, trying to find the narrow window doesn't instill a lot of confidence in me. That's not his strength. We tried alternative ways to get it close that if executed well (or not executed well by the OU D) could have been positive plays. Such is football.

If we're going to call plays like we did today on first down we might as well concede the down and not risk injury. It was that bad.

The point was the play calls on first and second seemed to be calls you'd run when you are settling for field goal. Throw down field. We have pretty good receivers.
