The Man Behind The Curtain
I'm done with the belly gazing for the day, and it's not even noon yet. Let's talk about the one side of the ball we all thought would be this team's Achilles heel before the season began: Defense.
Considering the shaky play last year by individuals like Verrett, the injuries, extracurricular activites in the offseason, and unknown freshmen asked to step up early we were all ready to write off the 2012 defense as Patterson's worst ever. Boy were we wrong! This season just continued to cement the defensive genius that is Gary Patterson as this defense stepped up and played at the top in the nation's toughest conference; ironically, all without an offense we thought would be the star before the season started. To think that we only lose Cain going into next season — assuming Maponga, Verrett and Shannon return; and the aforementioned extracurricular activities are in the past — is there any doubt that this unit has a chance to best the 2010 team's record as the number one defense in the nation?
Last night without a blitz to support the pressure of the front four the defense took on another group of corn fed B1G uglies and, with the exception of one series, not only held their own but controlled the game. This game was very similar to the Rose Bowl, without the muffed punt TCU wins a close game with little offensive production all on the backs of the defense against one of the nation's best runners. With so many Big XII teams losing their star QBs next season how many offensive coordinators are going to have nightmares preparing for these guys?
