Lawrence Journal-World: TCU coach takes upset in stride

By Jesse Newell

Fort Worth, Texas — Texas Christian University basketball coach Trent Johnson didn’t appear to be overly excited following his team’s stunning 62-55 victory over No. 5 Kansas University on Wednesday.

There was a reason for that, he said.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for the team we just beat. I’ve got a lot of respect,” Johnson said. “That guy that coaches that team (KU coach Bill Self) is not one of the top five best coaches in this country; he’s one of the top five coaches in basketball, period.
“Trust me when I tell you, they might as well crown them now. Teams go through lulls.”

Johnson only took partial credit for his team’s first conference win as part of the Big 12.

“The only way you beat a great team, a well-coached team, a team with the kind of tradition they have (is for them) to not be at their best,” Johnson said. “Let’s not kid ourselves.” ...

I was extremely impressed with johnson during and after the game. It is obvious that he has been involved in and won big games in the past. Love his humility and he is calm under pressure.

yeah, i got to see him close at the frogdom luncheon, and really liked the way he carried himself. seemed like a humble guy, but a guy you kind of want to impress and wouldn't wanna let down if you were playing for him

I've coached baseball teams that have gone through O-Fer years and you become numb to the loosing and start to accept it. Our team and our coach didn't accept it - they are winners.

I've posted on here before that I had the opportunity to speak with CTJ before one of the Frog's early season practices and I really liked his style. It's hard to explain, but he's played before and you can tell. He was able to connect with me like I was one of the fellas and I'm guessing his kids can connect with him too. I think he can get it done here.

Go Frogs!

CDC hired him because he had success, experience and patience to weather the storm. The last 2 coaches couldn't handle the adversity.

Even before last night, I like what he brings and his honesty.

We've got the right coach and you can see he has a plan and he knows getting it implemented will take time. The team has a long way to go but the foundation is being laid. It suddenly doesn't feel as dark as it has.
