SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. — Texas Christian coach Gary Patterson sat atop a large podium Thursday at the front of a massive hotel ballroom at Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl media day, his team interspersed at smaller podiums and tables, all within sight.
To his right, not so far away, was rangy freshman defensive end Devonte Fields. All the way on the other side from Patterson, senior linebacker Kenny Cain. And everywhere between and around them, more examples of Patterson’s old program colliding with his new one.
TCU might be the perfect model of how to put a college football program on the modern national map. An illustration of ingenuity, loyalty, sticktoitiveness and, lastly, timing.
The Horned Frogs’ tilt with Michigan State in Saturday’s Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in nearby Tempe, Ariz., caps the first season of TCU’s true arrival among the sport’s big boys. The old TCU was simply allowed token appearances. ...
