Road trip: UL football selected to play in New Mexico Bowl vs TCU​

After an agonizing defeat in the Sun Belt Conference championship game, Louisiana football can wipe the slate clean and prepare to battle for another trophy.

The Ragin’ Cajuns (10-3,7-1 SBC) have been selected to play in the New Mexico Bowl against TCU at 1:15 p.m. C.T, on Dec. 28 in Albuquerque.

This will be the first time the Cajuns appear in this bowl game giving head coach Micheal Desormeaux and his team a new challenge to conquer. The Horned Frogs (8-4, 4-2 Big 12) are a battle-tested group that ended the 2024 college football regular season with a 20-13 win over Cincinnati.

Interesting they were already down their all-conference POY starting QB then lost their No. 2 QB early in the championship game. Some other injuries too. Helps explain their last game result.

While discovering their bowl game destination and opponent comes with some excitement, it also brings about pressure for a Cajuns team that’s banged up heading into bowl season. During the SBC championship game, starting fifth-year quarterback Chandler Fields went down with an injury during the second quarter and never returned.

Fields was already a backup to original QB1, fifth-year signal caller and Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year Ben Wooldridge, who has been out since Week 11. Now, the starting spot belongs to true freshman Daniel Beale, who played the most snaps of his college career in Saturday’s 33-3 loss to Marshall.

Along with Fields, redshirt junior wide receiver Robert Williams went down with an injury during the SBC championship game. With some of their key offensive weapons banged up, Desormeaux and his staff will have their work cut out for them but will have 20 days to get ready.
