No before that in the MWC and WAC days they used the phrase "Just TCU please" in their media guides, etc.

Its a branding issue for the athletic department and the school does not officially just want to be called "TCU" only.

It's not just an athletic department thing. Here's what the university brand standards say:

Many major universities use their initials in external publications and TCU is no exception. On all official University publications and external advertisements the name should appear as “TCU.”

Texas Christian University may be spelled out elsewhere in the advertisement or publication if further clarification is needed.

While the university doesn't prohibit the full name from being used, it pretty much officially just wants to be called TCU. Whether that's good or not is debatable, but there's no argument to be had about the university's preference.

TCU is not Christian. Baylor and Liberty University are great examples of Christian schools.
I’ll put our Christians up against their Christians any day. We are some bad ass Christians! GRRRRRRRR!!!!!
GO FROGS!
BEAT cal!
Spit Blood ~~<~<and [Baylor asshoe] & liberty!!

USC is also University of South Carolina and USC sued Carolina and won the right to use USC and just SC. TCU better easier to brand they should call is what we want to be called darn it!!!!

Several yeas ago, the TCU football media guide pointedly stated that the athletic program preferred media to use just "TCU" in identifying the teams....And I remember the 2010 Game Day at Utah when a sign read "2 things I hate: Texans and Christians"....
Just TCU please.

Not a member of the Disciples of Christ (Christian) denomination, but wasn't the "Christian" in the title an identification term with that denomination, like "Methodist" identified the affiliation of SMU? And in that case, the "Southern" was left over from the pre-Civil War rift in that denomination, just like "Southern Baptist" referred to the geo-political status of those congregations....
