KU Game Observations

Didn’t get to watch until last night. Here are my thoughts:

1. We could be an average run blocking OL but we don’t have the mentality to do it. Being a good run blocking OL is as much about committing to beat up on people and move them around. Briles can’t stand the idea of having to establish the run. This style of offense sucks and doesn’t win games.
2. Linebacker play in quarters 1-2 was bad. I don’t know what fits they are supposed to make but I saw several times where one would just bury his head opposite of where the play was designed to go.
3. My starting LB’s would be a mix of 33, 12, and 3. They analyze and tackle better and are around the ball.
4. We are paper thin on the DL. 42 plays well with his hands, but should never lineup over a guard. This is a recruiting/portal problem. Missing 94 & 97 has really hurt.
5. 95 had another good game. He consistently required double teams and blew up runs. He’s going to make serious $$$ next year in the SEC/BIG.
6. The OL gets zero help from #4. He plays way too high and doesn’t hit the hole. #26 has earned the majority of carries but won’t get them because he’s only a freshman and the coaches won’t trust him.
7. The fumble by #4? Why wasn’t he taken out of the game? Trey Sanders fumbled against Stanford and hasn’t been seen since. Why the unequal treatment?
8. There are almost no playmakers on the defense. #2 flashed several times though. He plays hard. 44 is solid also.
9. Where has #21 been all season? The guy kind of disappeared after his pick six against Michigan.
10. The first pick was terrible. Late, too much air, and to the middle of the field. A trifecta of suck.
11. We have lost 8 turnovers in two games. That is hilariously bad and a direct reflection of poor play by our guys mixed with poor playcalls.
12. The OL plays with zero intensity. Great OLs love helping a running back finish a play and will talk trash to the DTs after moving them off the ball. Our OL doesn’t finish blocks and doesn’t seem to care much. Only 62, 56, and 71 have played well for significant portions of the season.
13. Hate watching our defense play in zone coverage. They sit in their zone and stare at the qb while WRs leak out to the open spots. What they should do is cover the WR who enters their zone. There were several instances of a wide open WR sitting there with a db/lb 8 yards off, not moving and staring at the qb. It’s the dumbest thing a defender can do. ZONE BECOMES MAN WHEN A RECEIVER ENTERS YOUR ZONE. Blows my mind

Running the ball is the most important aspect of football and is the highest predictor of success. It allows success in other areas to compound. Run the ball well and stay in 3rd and short? The defense doesn’t know what’s coming. Run the ball well for the majority of the game? Keeps your defense fresh and attacking. Run the ball well and force the defense to commit extra bodies and it opens up the pass. I hate our offensive style and wish we could grab the OC from Arizona. But we won’t. We’ll ride Briles until the wheels fall off. If they haven’t already.

Lots wrong, but I'll start with your statement that "Briles can’t stand the idea of having to establish the run. This style of offense sucks and doesn’t win games."
Briles offenses are always run first, but you can't do that when your OL sucks and your RB1 dances more than DTWS. And I'm no fan of Briles.

Don’t bet on number 6 para. I suspect Payne will get the majority of carries v UH

As to Sanders, imo he’s checked out. I thought he had as good a spring as anyone on the team. I don’t know what’s up with him but he seems to have lost interest

Agree with your LBs. 57 may not break a 5.0 40 yard dash...yet having him in the game so much he is trying to cover WR's. It's just a bad match up problem. Misses a lot of tackles too, for being a run stuff guy. Watching Cooks at the end of the game fly in to pressure the QB to pass early is the type of play we need to see from a LB.

Thought our run defense and run offense looked much better.
Even a pedestrian run offense will help tremendously. When the other teams know you have to throw 60 times per game it's tough on the QB.

Meh, we won. Granted, Kansas is not a good team at all. But it’s a road win after the wheels came off at half time 2 weeks ago. Long way to go, but it’s a win.

Did they mix up d line? Because it looks like they found a grouping that works.

#13 is a disaster. Why he stays on the field is beyond my Comprehension. If we don't have anyone else available, then that's another Coaching issue TCU has.

Didn’t get to watch until last night. Here are my thoughts:
Well.......

When I entered Arrowhead, my first thought was that this place is a dump. The last Chiefs game I went to was during the Todd Haley era with Matt Cassell as the QB. Have they done anything to improve the stadium since then? Doubtful. My brother said that only NFL stadium that is worse is Chicago's Soldier Field. Haven't been inside that one, so.....

Second, every time KU threw a pass, I was happy. Their OC did us favor when they threw it. KU's WRs were average at best and their best players are their RBs. We did not have a lot of success stopping them on the ground, but they kept throwing it all over. Reminded me of a Schultz gameplan.

Third, our passing game is elite, but JH has to cut down on those awful floater picks. In clutch time, the Frogs can feature Savion, JPR, McAllister and Bech. That is flat out dangerous. It helps them when Payne is running hard inside, too. Kaz needs to keeping working with him, so we can nudge him up to 15-18 carries later in the season.

Fourth, it was great to see the defense get some big stops in the fourth quarter. Lots to work on, but the last three drives of the game for KU were 3 and punt, stopped on downs and interception. I know it's Kansas, but it had been a while since we saw the Frog D fight and make big plays late in the game. If only we could have done that once against UCF......

Finally, it is nice to shake off the last six quarters and get a W. There are still a lot of things to clean up, but I will take it. I am very thankful we won as I am the only non-Jayhawk in the family. I am returning to Lawrence soon for my folks' 60th anniversary and the dress code will be casual Rock Chalk. I am sure we will talk about nothing but fun memories and KU hoops. Hah!
