It's an advantage. Don't have to listen to coaches or staff nonsense. Can pretend he didn't hear anything anytime it is convenient for him. Just sign language and reading lips. And he can pretend he didn't see that too.

This kid is going to be great for the Frogs for two reasons. 1) He is very talented. 2) He won’t be listening to all the [ deposit from a bull that looks like Art Briles ] coming from the board…

When I first coached youth sports (soccer at the time) I caught myself yelling instructions to players. I quickly learned/remembered that when you're on the field you don't hear anything. I started to instruct only in practice (or on the sideline talking to a kid who was subbed out) and just coach during games. I of course gave reminders in between pitches in baseball/softball but in most cases tuning out coaches is the best strategy.

Back in the late 70s my step father coached for the FWIS's Deaf school. They went undefeated the one season he coached. His stud running back was Ronald Meeks. Ronald had an older brother named Weldon who played RB for Rice.
I know I’ve told this story before on here, but I once spent a week in Little Rock staying with the parents of former TCU MBB star Dennis Nutt and attending the summer basketball camp put on by his father at the nearby Arkansas School for the Deaf where he coached. Sweatergod, their mascot was the Leopard.

Took me longer than I would like to admit to understand the importance of the mascot name. I was like, what, leopards can't hear? Though it was only about 45 seconds, it was embarrassing once it clicked.
