SAN ANTONIO — Before taking his talents to TCU and Fort Worth, Harlan Hawks senior running back G'Ivori Graham is hoping to help his team advance in the UIL State Playoffs Friday night against Dripping Springs at Alamo Stadium.

Graham lost his hearing at age 4, but that hasn’t slowed him down on the football field. Using a combination of lip reading, hand signals, and acute vision, Graham has become one of the state’s top high school running backs.

“What I hear most of the time is just sounds,” Graham said. “I can’t hear any words. Everything is just completely like noise. Echoes and things like that. It is just sounds everywhere.”

Despite this, Graham has adapted seamlessly to the game. Coaches rely on hand signals and visual cues, which Graham says feel natural to him because of his experience with sign language. “Sometimes when I miss a hand signal I would look at the quarterback, or the coaches would make a hand tap or just point numbers,” he said.

I am wary. Somebody explain to me how this doesn’t complicate things on the field of play and practice. The Frogs are struggling as is. Hand signals from the QB in the huddle or the backfield or the coaches from the sideline that opposing teams can see too? TCU was his only Power 4 offer so others maybe steered away from this wrinkle.

Would have liked to learn what happened to him. Perhaps a virus or illness that caused his hearing loss?
Aminoglycoside antibiotics such as gentamicin have been implicated with hearing loss in some instances. Lost of different potential causes.
They say that, when you lose one sense, the other senses become heightened and more sharp. That is probably a good explanation of why blind people taste so good...

Facebook response from his dad to a comment/question I posted:
it is a inherited hearing loss trace from my wife family. Grandparent/Grandmother which we both are grateful to be able to share light on the embracement of their ability over their disabilities. To show the world that being deaf/ hard of hearing you can overcome adversity if you stay consistent and put in the work as other to not put a limit on your limitations. That how you become great as a hearing impaired person. Success come with no excuses but a commitment to yourself that you trusted in the process and never give up

Depends on what part you are eating. At least that’s what I heard…

probably not a problem. Sonny doesn't say anything to the players on the sidelines anyway.

I'm never dining at your house.

And I don't want your Chili con Hombre recipe, either.

Hand him the football, point to the endzone, he will know what he can do next. He isn’t the first guy w hearing loss to play football successfully. Meanwhile how has the rush offense been the last 2 years been with guys without limitations?

Why do blind people taste better than sighted people? Do they have a different diet that impacts the taste?

I played with a guy who was hearing impaired. vicious safety. he was not a starter, but he saw a lot of playing time. he could sense the whistle, I guess because of vibrations or something. Never saw him get flagged for a late hit.

I wonder if our running backs would do better if they wore earplugs. You don't have to hear a hole in the defensive line, you have to see it.
