That doesn't necessarily mean he called things different, it could mean when they did rush, they got more yardage per play. Dude was not a great play caller or leader of his qb.
Briles called way more run plays at Arkansas. Not just yardage. Designed run plays. Was some of that because of Pitman, who knows. But they had good run plays there, which is why I was hopeful he would do the same here.

He had a run first QB. KJ Jefferson had 158 rushing attempts in 2022. 300 passing attempts.

any stats on the percentage of runs SMU called when SC was there?
SC?

if you mean Dykes, then SMU ran:
46.1% in 2018
51.5% in 2019
50.0% in 2020
47.4% in 2021

And for what it’s worth, over his career as play caller prior to TCU, Briles’ teams have run:
64.7% in 2015 (Baylor)
56.7% in 2016 (Baylor)
64.8% in 2017 (FL Atlantic)
53.1% in 2018 (Houston)
52.5% in 2019 (FL State)
58.1% in 2020 (Ark)
65.2% in 2021 (Ark)
62.9% in 2022 (Ark)
59.8% overall

So these last three years were the only three years of his career where his offense passed more than ran.

We should just copy Wisconsin, then everyone will be happy. They ran it 61% of the time this year. Only scored 13 ppg, but hey, they didn't get cute and their red zone offense was good (not really) because they run the damn ball.

Just seems odd. SD keeps saying he want to run it more. ESPN's breakdown on portal qb's says they guy we having coming in from smart kid land will fit in as Dykes looks to move away from the air raid. Which, I thought SD already said was what he wanted to do before this year.

Indiana run plays accounted for 60.45% of their plays in 2025's numbers.
In the Rose Bowl, the Hoosiers went run heavy, bama went pass heavy (cause they can't run the ball well this year). Indiana kicked the everloving [ Finebaum ] out of bama.

Are you saying that because of Hoover's inability to run, Briles was forced to change his offense and not use RPOs, because that is exactly what happened. Some are saying that because of Hoover's lack of running ability the RPOs didn't have a running QB component and therefore our running game sucked. Of course, the same people think that we ran the air raid.
Hoover's immobility was a separate negative factor that compounded the weak OL.

…or to fit the head coach’s preference…
I don't know. Is Sonny about cuteness? Seen a lot the last 3 years. A lot of people blamed GP for the offensive woes but my personal observation was that GP was only vaguely aware that we had an offense. I don't think any of the 2 yard passes, empty backfields, slow developing running plays and way too much use of the short side of the field fit GPs MO. He just let the OC do their thing.

Unless we got behind by a good margin. Then he would command the OC run the ball to eat up clock (or more or less surrender) to protect his defensive stats.

I kid, I kid.....but not really, this really did happen at times.
