KATV: Shannon named UA linebackers coach

By Robert Burton, Sports

FAYETTEVILLE –Randy Shannon, who has won three national titles as a player and coach, has been named Arkansas' linebackers coach, head coach Bret Bielema announced Sunday.

"Randy Shannon is a great coach and a great person," said Bielema. "He has been a part of multiple national championship teams and, more importantly, he changed the lives of numerous young men. He has spent nearly his entire coaching career at Miami, and his defenses consistently ranked inside the top 10 nationally. I think a lot of people know Randy got a lot of great things done at Miami and most recently with TCU. He is a disciplinarian who has high standards, and he is skillful at relating to his players. He is a coach players turn to for guidance, and his players have always been prepared and played with intensity and desire."

Last season, Shannon coached linebackers at TCU following a four-year stint as head coach at the University of Miami, where he led the Hurricanes to a 28-22 record from 2007-10. Before rising to the head position, Shannon was the defensive coordinator for Miami from 2001-06 and was an assistant coach for the Hurricanes from 1991-97. In between his stints on the Coral Gables campus, Shannon spent three seasons as an assistant coach with the Miami Dolphins. Shannon, who lettered at Miami from 1985-88, was part of three of the Hurricanes' five national championships as a player and assistant coach. ...

I would kinda like to know wth with this? A lateral move? I find it a little insulting actually. I would have thought he would leave TCU for a DC or heaqd coach job. What, he didn't like working under GMFP? Well, he is still not the guy at Arkie. He left for a few bucks more?

I obviously don't know his reason and based on that complete lack of info like I said I find the lateral move a little insulting.

Fortunately there are plenty of good coaches who woulds love to come to TCU and coach one of the nation's top defenses under one of the best-ever defensive coach.

I agree. I mean it's not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things, but it's a kick in the nuts I wasn't expecting.

The whole Randy Shannon coaching LB's at any school is a weird story to me? It's like he is hiding out being a position coach. I would think he could be a defensive coordinator at "name your school" tomorrow if he wanted. I know he wasn't real successful as a HC at Miami but he was a very successful defensive coordinator.

Weird.

He wasn't staying here long, he was a temp to fill a gap that opened right before season. Shannon will get SEC defense experience on resume to get back to head coach.

He can a make a difference at Ark defense, not as much here. Always will be perceived as Patterson's defense. Perception is accurate, particularly in game planning, but not so sure on game days. I doubt coaches on field (for Offense or Defense) make many of play calls/changes. They can't see the formations/depth/coverage adjustments.

Bumpas is going nowhere, so I'm assuming he felt the opportunity for advancement is greater at Arkansas with an entirely new coaching staff.

Completely agree with the above. I don't take the least bit of offense to him moving. Good for him and thanks for the time spent.

My guess is that he understood that GP owns the defense and does things his way, appreciates the year learning from Patterson and will incorpoate some of GPs ideas/concepts into his future position...and will end up a DC within two years. TCU almost always has a great defense...and he won't get the credit (whether deserved or not) for how good the defense does because it's expected. In fact, I would guess their is litle upside and lot's of downside reputation risk at stake. At Ark...this isn't nessesarily the case. And he gets a raise.

Good for him.

So the defensive coordinator at Arkansas won't get the credit? It will go to Shannon?

I think Shannon will get more credit at Arkansas than he will at TCU as TCU has consistently good defenses. Since we have consistently good defenses, then most people point to GP as the reason....and not the position coacheds. After all, he built that reputation over 15 years at TCU.

At Arkansas, I think the credit get's spread around a bit more. He is a big-name position coach versus a non-named position coach. A good Arkansas defense on his resume, along with everything else he's done including a year with GP...I think that's all better for him longer-term versus staying at TCU. Of course, if he is just looking for DC position, I would have suggested he stay until DP retires then he could be here....

Besides, this is just an opinion.
