KU football coach Lance Leipold blasts Big 12 officiating in Jayhawks’ loss to TCU

By Gary Bedore

Dismayed by some of the calls made by the refs during his Kansas Jayhawks’ 38-27 loss to TCU, coach Lance Leipold critiqued the officiating during his postgame interview session Saturday at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

“It’s OK. They can fine me today. I don’t really care,” said Leipold, KU’s fourth-year head coach.

He was willing to answer a reporter’s question about the officials’ performance in a game that dropped the Jayhawks to 1-4 (0-2 Big 12). Coaches sometimes are fined by league officials when they discuss officiating after contests.

Was I supposed to type something here?
Well, he's not wrong. The Officiating has been ghastly this year. Just a glance at last week's debacle would illustrate that. Games around the Nation are suffering from not just bad calls, but "What the Hell was that?!?" calls (See: Va. Tech at Miami (Fla.)). They're just making it up as they go along...

Good thing he didn't argue a phantom holding call from 40 yards away with the son of the head of officials. That'll get you ejected.

"In college, the five-yard window doesn’t exist. Defenders can’t initiate contact with receivers while the ball’s in the air, but they can joust with them all the way down the field until the QB throws. DBs get to beat up on receivers a lot longer in college games."

Also I thought in college the DB does not have to look back for the ball, just avoid contact that would impede the receiver from making a reception.

That game was nothing compared to last week's officiating. Not just TCU, but, particularly non-conference games there has been more home-cooking than I can remember in a long time. The Michigan State - Florida Atlantic officiating was criminal. The ACC still, from what I have seen, has the worst officiating; and has for many years (of the Power conferences).

I stll remember the flag-a-minute mentality of the CUSA officials back when we were in that conference. Looked like they got paid by the flag.

Of the three KU fans are complaining about the most that happened over a few minutes in the late third (the third down catch ruled incomplete, overturned fumble because arm moving forward and the disputed block in the back), the only one I think there is even a question is the third down catch. And the review was called “call stands” so tough call either way.

Little kid a few rows behind me, maybe 5 or 6 kept bellowing out “refs you suck” after that stretch. Made me chuckle. Football culture is an interesting thing.

Hmm? One would think that the first coach ejection in the history of CFB would warrant a meeting between the head of officials and the official involved. Guess that probably won't happen now.
