... are you guys wondering why we keep signing athlete types and not DEs and linebackers?

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for the guys we are signing and I think they all have great potential. But except for D Hall and Billings we don't even have rumors of D linemen, and honestly both of those guys are remote chances at best. Pretty much the same story with LBs, though IMO we aren't as thin there between current guys and recruits.

Do the coaches have that much faith in the guys we've got? Or are we unable to seal the deal with recruits in those areas?

Some of it may be a slight change in philosophy. Faster S/LB hybrid types may be a bigger priority for GP now that we're in the B12, which is very pass heavy.

I'm not too terribly worried just because we've still got:

Fields - two years
Chucky - two years
Pierson - three years
McFarland - three years
Lathan - three years
Carraway - three years

We've realized that we can't compete in this league with defense alone so we're forgetting about it and loading up on offense.

Or something.

Patterson has always recruited guys based on where he sees them playing, not what position they have been playing. How many RBs in the past have we seen moved to defense over the years?

An article published today about Denzel is that he is a multi-sport star and hit 200lbs without much weight room time. At 6'2 and 4.4-5 time I can help but think they let him add 20 lbs and be a LB for us.

Henderson is a Fields prototype.

Really? Wasn't he a DT in HS? Hard to imagine him having anywhere near the edge speed of Fields.

Henderson is interesting, because he seems to be just about the least talked about recruit on this board. Can't remember the last time someone mentioned him in a post.

I think this but don't forget we have 3 LB's in this class which is more than normal although I admit with the attrition I'd like another one in this class. They have been trying and we seem to always get a signing day suprise or two. Denzel is bigger than the current crop of LB signee's as well so maybe that's where he ends up.

Good list, but Fields has three years left unless you know something I don't.

Feisty - Is Henderson expected to be an immediate contender for a spot or will he be red-shirted? I guess we probably can't know for sure but if he is Fields 2.0 then I'd love to see him on the field ASAP.

I know Johnson and some others can play LB once they bulk up, but I'm concerned about our immediate needs, not our needs in 2014...

I think the point with Fields is the great likelihood he leaves for the draft after three years.

What is it about three LBs seems like not enough?

Especially when we're playing more 4-1-6

Most teams in the Big 12 are pass happy, but there are physical teams too. K-State, KU, and UT were all run-first teams. You have to have versatility at LB. Smaller guys that can cover, and bigger guys to control the run. The 3 guys we have now all have tons of potential, but they're all very light. Hence, many of us were hoping for a LB around 220-230. In LRBWHCGP I trust though.
