  • TCU transfer quarterback Josh Hoover has committed to Indiana football.
  • Hoover was previously committed to Indiana under former coach Tom Allen before flipping to TCU.
  • Hoover started for multiple years at TCU, throwing for over 3,000 yards and 25 touchdowns in each of the last two seasons.
BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football has landed Fernando Mendoza's heir apparent by landing a commitment from top-ranked TCU transfer quarterback Josh Hoover on Sunday night, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Hoover, who was a one-time IU commit during Tom Allen's tenure, comes to Bloomington after a successful stint as a multi-year starter for the Horned Frogs. He topped 3,000 yards and 25 passing touchdowns each of the last two seasons while helping lead the team to back-to-back nine win seasons.

Mendoza hasn't announced his future plans, but he's widely expected to enter the NFL Draft as an expected top pick. He cleaned up during the college football award season — he won all the major national offensive awards and was named Big Ten Player of the Year — and became the first IU player to win the Heisman.

Landing Hoover, gives IU a ready-made successor.

The angst of grown men about a 22 year old kid going and making life changing money is hilarious.
Exactly. Even if it's for "just" half a million more, that's still a lot of money.

I don't blame any kid for going out and getting as much as possible for themselves. That's the way the system is set up. I think it's terrible for the good of the sport, but if I'm in those kids position, I'm taking advantage of the system as much as I can.

There is some truth in the idea that staying at one school might provide more off the field opportunity down the road, but given the kind of money being thrown around, who cares? And it's not like colleges provide the only networking opportunities one will ever have. Get what you can get, manage the money well, and worry about the rest down the road.

In the end, I think it was best for all parties. Fans had enough of the turnovers and disappearing act in big games, but he’s going somewhere that will elevate his game and has stability with his OC and QB coach. Hoover was a really good QB for us and I wish him well. But I think this frees up some capital for us to continue getting other needs in the portal.

If someone offered me 100,000 more for even a couple of years all things being equal you can’t turn it down. I personally don’t see how people justify paying this for a game but don’t blame the kids for taking it. I don’t get bailing before all games are played though. Don’t desert your teammates. That’s a character thing to me.
