Ok - I see the hyperbole, but he has a definitive track record that is getting long, by DC/HC standards. Add to that the supposedly inferior athletes he has recruited and 'coached up'. Add to that we completely dominated a league (for years, not once or twice) known for offensive firepower with smothering defenses. Now, in a premier league, known for high-powered NFL caliber athletes and offenses - our Defense is not only credible and stingy...they are the best and creating the worst offensive stats for our opponents for any game.

He's gotta be in the conversation.

I really agree. I think the issue is sometimes they are not that flashy and it gives the impression that the other team is just having a "bad day". But, what is consistent is teams always seem to have their "bad day" against us. I think to the untrained eye, they do not see all of the little things his teams do so well. CGP is so good at figuring out what it takes to beat you (on both sides of the ball) and doing that.

I wouldn't even take Bear Bryant over him. Patterson is to the defense as Dutch was to the offense.

Considering where he came from, the talent pool he has had to work with (no disrespect, kids picked a winner) and the environments he has coached in: (Boise @ Boise, OK @ Norman, Utah@CGD, Utah @ Utah, Wisky@MF Rose Bowl, Clemson@Clemson, USC@Sun Bowl, taxes @ Austin (both games).

Not to mention the records against D1 opponents, week-in, week-out. I am not one to diminish the accomplishments of beating the old MWC slate.

It is the combination. Smart, fiery, driven, and catalytic.

You can find those qualities, but usually not all together. Sometimes they don't fit in an institution, either.

A more corporate place would have discarded the opportunity to hire and there's some truth to the idea that necessity is the mother of invention. TCU needed a lot of things and offered a unique environment that was open to change with fewer impediments and all the necessary capital.

Including the TX game and including the TCU game in the season averages for each team--usually a bad day!!!--you get the following deficits (assuming I typed in all the numbers right):

Teams score 9.6 points less than their season avgs.
Teams rush for 69.8 yards less than their season avgs.
Teams pass for 42.9 yards less than their season avgs.
Teams have 101.2 yards less total offense than their season avgs.

Of course taking out the TCU games would make these diffs even larger.
