When I was a kid in the late '60's, a friend's father had knee repair surgery. No big deal. Routine stuff even back then. Messed up ligaments ended the father's college football career, and at the time of the injury nothing could be done but retire from football. The father had hobbled around on a knee that usually hurt, and definitely hurt when the weather changed, for 15 - 20 years.
