I am just accepting the reality of TCU Football

I grew up with a Dad that went to every game and took me with him. My first distinct memory was of the Frogs playing UT in the snow at ACS in '74 and getting strummed. A whole bunch of similar memories followed (except for the 84 season). It was that way while I was a student at TCU and then the '98 season occurred. Didn't know it then, but that was the front end of, for the most part, a wonderful string of football seasons for the Frogs.

I was very much against letting GP go. I was very surprised that I was in the minority in that most seemed to support the decision to let him go. I made the comment a few times to friends-family that we would come to regret that decision down the road but then the '22 season happened and I looked like an idiot. Here we are a year and a half later though and I am haven't been this apethetic about TCU football since that last couple of years under Sullivan.

I was a kid during the F.A. Dry years but I remember my Dad always commenting about how hard the Frogs played and that win or lose they had earned his support. Despite some very rough seasons, I always felt the Frogs were as tough and physical as our talent allowed under Wacker (funny, I was against letting him go as well). The vibe that I get from watching this year's team is akin to how I felt during the last two years under Sullivan..... No overall identity, no juice or excitement, physically soft with some nice skill players that don't have the right parts around to let them truly shine and a coach that seems to have no answers for how to right the ship.

A lot of people both within and outside the program worked so, so hard for a lot of years to make TCU football a respected, national program. You have to fight just as hard once it's earned to keep it. I don't see that watching this team and I don't feel it when I'm in the stands. For as long as it took to get us to that point, it doesn't take much to lose it and I feel like we've now lost it. I don't see it getting better with this staff.

Agree 100%

These are my exact thoughts. I assume the thoughts of most TCU fans that have been around 25+ years

It wasn’t just the last 1-3 years folks!! That’s not the right answer either!!View attachment 16389
LOL the graphic that blocks out an 11-3 in 2017 and 11-2 in 2015.

This board needs to remember that we aren't Alabama or tOSU.

Yes GMFP had "only" two 11 win seasons in his last seven (actually three counting 2014). Maybe that is who we are - a team that will be average for a few years and jump up and have a big one every so often. That would be as good as or better than plenty of much bigger schools.

Don't give up yet! Sure, we have some tough games left. We have a break now to pull things back together. None of our remaining games is unwinnable. We still have a lot to play for. Go Frogs!!

We are selling out the stadium and have 90% student attendance.

Trust me. It can get a lot worse. Wacker days the stadium was empty. I think I counted 30 people at one kickoff in 1995. Community viewed TCU as University of North Texas/UH, sort of joke. I knew lots of students that went four years without attending a single game.

It can get much worse.
…and it will.

I thought it was time for Gary to go and believe a puppy dies every time someone suggests bringing him back but a lot of facts posted here.

Yeah. Wacker actually brought TCU football back from the dead. He had his faults, too, but probably doesn't get enough credit....
Unfortunately the era of Dick Bumpas has passed. The true badass behind GP’s defense.

Everyone I know that really knows college football or played under him ….says this. He’s an unsung hero and a legend.

Glad I was able to participate in the greatest period in modern history for TCU football. Sad I watched us eat our own and foolishly assume we had the ability to flip a switch and somehow have a better version than we had in our midst. I hate that I was right in my evaluation of the hire. I hate that I feel right that GMFP, for all his flaws, should have been given the opportunity to be left alone and able to choose his own fate. I hate that we lost CDC, I hate that we’ve become what we have become. I am not optimist that my kids will ever see another golden era. The sport is changing by the day and the program is in shambles without a strong, visionary leader. #PUKE
I truly think GP would have been right behind Saban out the door with what is happening in college football. The odds for a national championship or even multiple ones, start with the conf schedules “coin toss” every year. Right behind that are issues with geography. Is SMU gonna be big big rivals with Clemson and or Miami? I’m sure coffee shops all over Oregon are humming about the game with Rutgers that may kick off at 1200 eastern time. Player “free agency” is out of control and will get much worse before it gets better. Guarantee GP is saying NFW!!!!!

What was his famous quote? Something like football is a violent game so let’s go punch those in the face. That wouldn’t fly in today’s world, but I kind of think Kyle Whittingham is the last of that mold.
I might get this slightly wrong but close to this:
“Football is a violent game played by violent people. . .
So put a smile on your face, murder in your heart, and let’s go kick those scheissers in the mouth.”

FWIW, my family was all Arkie fans growing up bc my uncle played there. Bump was a hero of mine as a kid: a nasty all-American defensive tackle, at all of about 215 lbs, lol.

This question needs to go away. GP led awful teams in 2016, and 2018-2021. He had way too much loyalty to ineffective assistants, and refused to change with the times. No way he could function effectively in the world of the portal and NIL.
I agree it does need to go away. I asked it at a time of frustration. I know he could not function in the new world of college football. I will think before I post on the coaching topic again.

I don't think it's necessarily true that he, "could not function." He has such a great mind for studying offenses and scheming defenses, he could be a very valuable tool, just not as a Head Coach. If his ego could reset and have his goal to be the baddest defensive coordinator or position group coach on the planet, he could get that done. But I'm pretty sure he couldn't swallow that pill.
