Houston Chronicle: Big 12 takes cautious approach as Big Ten restarts conference realignment

AUSTIN - The Big 12 is taking a cautious approach to conference realignment after the move of Maryland and Rutgers to the Big Ten earlier this week, a University of Texas official said Thursday.

The Big 12 has been at the center of many of the realignment moves the last three years since the Big Ten's Jim Delany mentioned his league's plan to expand in December 2009. First, it was Nebraska going to the Big Ten and Colorado moving to the Pac-12 after the 2010 season, and then last year when Texas A&M and Missouri both left the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference.

Through it all, the Big 12 weathered various other storms as Texas and Oklahoma were wooed by the Pac-12 (and maybe taking Texas Tech and Oklahoma State with them) and listened to various mentions of Texas to the Big Ten or ACC.

This season, the Big 12 added West Virginia and TCU, which played Texas here on Thanksgiving night as the fill-in for the school from College Station. ...

Thank God for the GOR because without it the SEC might be looking west instead of east for a couple of teams. With all the UT angst over not playing A&M anymore there might be some impetus for UT to join the SEC and OU would follow.
