Hoover is an "expected No. 1 overall pick" in the 2027 NFL draft?

I'm sure Mel Kiper, Jr. has this guy on speed dial.

There is too much hate for Hoover on here. I understand why, but I don’t know what is dumber: predicting that Josh will be the #1 pick or predicting that he will be a bust. I bet he will have a good year & IU will lose a few games. He does have a better chance of starting a playoff game there than here.

I bet he will be better next year than he was for us because he will have better coaching, a better scheme & a stronger OL. He was a statue in the shotgun last year & got his ass kicked every game. It sucks that he bailed on us during the bowl game, but he is a Frog & I wish him well.

My guess is he has a pretty good year at IU, gets drafted somewhere, and spends a few years on an NFL roster. I think he’s got a better chance of being a bust, meaning I guess not making it in the NFL, than he does being the #1 overall pick so I think the latter is dumber.

I don’t hate him and I don’t blame him for getting as much money as he could.

For context, Sonny literally said in his podcast with Estridge (Frogs in a Pod.... Released today I think), that we have had 42 turnovers by the QB position in the last 2.5 yrs....

I hope that can improve under the IU guys.... But man, he's got such a gun slinger mentality.

It wasn’t just the number, it was when and how they happened. He had a few that were just incredibly bone-headed. Situational awareness was totally lost on him at times, maybe that can be coached out of him but it’s stuff you learn in early high school ball.

I don't see Hoover in the NFL. Perhaps this upcoming season will change that narrative, however I remember watching him under pressure throw into double and triple coverage, making turnovers, not seeing the open receiver, etc. He is going to face much better defenses in the Big10 so how will that change? I don't think our OL was great, but they were not the cause of many of these issues.

I do wish him good luck though. Maybe he will surprise the naysayers.

I have no real issue with Hoover. Not even how he left. It is what it is in the current college football football system. I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t have a very good season at Indiana…they’ll have outstanding talent surrounding him, great coaching and systems in place, and he’s a damn good college football quarterback. But not even his mom and dad do not think he will be the overall #1 pick in the NFL draft…frankly that’s just a dumb headline. Put that crap on the polymarket and see what the odds look like!?!?

I think Chris Bell WR out of Louisville was the best in CFB last year. Indiana transfer WRs Nick Marsh of Mich St & Shazz Preston of Tulane could be the best in '26.

One thing Hoover has that you have to have in the NFL as a QB is he can put the ball precisely in the only place where a receiver can make the catch. He can really lazer it in to the precise spot and timing patterns is his strong suit. Duggan still doesn’t have that - if he did he’d be playing in the league. Hoover to me is the prototypical NFL QB - except for height but go explain that to 6’0 Drew Brees, 6’0 Fran Tarkenton, 5’11 Russell Wilson, 5’11 Sonny Jurgenson, Kyler Murray 5’10. Hoover has the arm and the vision. I’ll bet Indiana brings out the Championship potential we’ve seen in him.

Mendoza was a late round pick before moving to IU, so I can see Josh making strides and getting into the late 1st/2nd round. But #1 overall? As far as a top NFL career, who is the last QB at his height that was successful as a true pocket passer?

I wouldn't bet against him. He's got talent and he's playing for Cignetti. I certainly don't feel compelled to root against him. If he wins at Indiana it doesn't mean that we missed out on something, because I don't think he'd have won in the same way if he'd stayed here. Does anyone think K-State would have been national champs if Will Howard hadn't transferred? No. Maybe they shouldn't have forced him out for Goldilocks, I don't know. We can't know that. I suspect that both Hoover and TCU will be improved after parting ways, and that the common denominator will be who they're both no longer working with on offense. But we'll have to await events to prove or disprove that thesis.

I still struggle to believe that you're saying he wouldn't have won in the same way here as he is at Indiana. It will take a while for me to square that concept.

I secretly wished that Hoov had gone to Tennessee after the '24 season as he just wasn't right for TCU or vice-versa. Under Sonny, we've needed a run capable qb and Hoov was at or near last in DI in that category. Essentially, he added a 12th man to every defense we played because opponents quickly figured out they didn't even require a spy linebacker/safety to watch him and could add a man to focus on the other 5 eligible pass-catchers/runners. Yes, he has a rocket arm and is very accurate but that just wasn't enough to overcome his lead feet. And when he was able to weakly scramble, I don't ever remember him finding an open man.

The defensive coordinators in the B10 can't wait to free up a linebacker or safety against IU because despite Cignetti being a mastermind, he ain't going to improve Hoover's running ability to any degree. Perhaps he has some other gameplan that includes Hoov's accuracy and if so, I wish Josh well. He's a great kid and he was above average here, just not good or great overall. I actually hope I'm proven wrong and will gladly eat crow.
