Hello Froggies-Mike Schultz

Hello there. Hope all is well with you guys. I always keep an eye on TCU since our time together in the MWC. I enjoyed out battles. Those were some good times.

Anyway, I come to ask about Mike Schultz. Rumor is hes on Utahs radar to be brought in as OC. I am curious your thoughts on him when he was there? Would he be a good hire? Why hasnt he had a shot at HC after 30 years of coaching? Why did he leave TCU in the first place?

Good luck next year.

He was too innovative in his offensive strategy for TCU. We needed some new guys to dumb it down, and so far, it's been successful. He's a good mind if you want to score between 10-20 points on offense a game.

To put it diplomatically.....it's safe to say that a large segment of the TCU fan base that resides here is not enamoured of Schultz's play calling ability.

Most TCU fans would probably fall into the category of not liking Schultz as a playcaller. He left because he wanted to get more experience elsewhere to possibly get a HC job. That didn't work out too well. I would probably shy away from him if I were Utah.

And some think that Schultz's game plans were what Patterson wanted, a very conservative, hang-on-to-the-ball offense.

My memory is that when Franchione left, Patterson was choice #1 for head coach, and Schultz was #2. If that isn't right, someone will probably correct me.

Schultz left TCU to be coordinator at Illinois, after an apparent second-place finish in the interviews to replace Rocky Long at New Mexico. The thought on this board was, that he needed to broaden his resume to try again for a D1 head coaching job. Ron Zook apparently threw Schultz under the bus after only one season as Zook tried, unsuccessfully, to cling to his Illinois job. No doubt that set back Schultz's career.

Think of it this way. In four years with Schultz as OC (2005-2008), TCU scored a total of 60 points against Utah. We nearly reached that total in each of the next two years.

I think he gets a bad rap with Frog fans. We had solid offenses under Shultz- averaged about #25-40 IIRC in total offense during his stay. After he left for Illinois, Dalton was an upper classman and we had two very successful offensive years, while Shultz faltered with the Illiini. This has further affected most Frog fans perspective on him.

It is my opinion that fans are hypercritical of coordinators, expecially offensive coordinators. Bottom line is that we had generally successful offenses under him, and the system we still have in place is basically his system. He also was the only other Franchione coach to stick around when Fran left, and that always played well with me.

I'd call him a solid coordinator overall.

He has a smoking hot daughter if I recall.

Also, when our kicker missed two chipshots against the Utes in '08 that would have sealed our 1st BCS appearance Schultz was blamed for the fail.
