Headed to Fort Worth next week. Suggestions?

My 10-year old daughter is attending swim camp at TCU next week and we decided to make a mini-trip out of it and stay in town to take in a little bit of Fort Worth while we're there. My wife and kid have never been and I've been very little.

We're staying downtown in Sundance Square. I'm planning to see as much of campus as possible...hit the bookstore, sneak around the stadium some, etc. I also have the standard eat at Lonesome Dove and go check out the Stockyards types of things on the agenda.

Anyone have any other "must do" suggestions for us while we're there?

Day 1: Lunch at Dutch's, dinner at the Woodshed.

Day 2: Lunch at Yucatan Taco Stand, dinner at La Familia.

Entertainment for the kids: it's hard to beat the Fort Worth zoo.

Entertainment for you and the wife: recommend one of Fort Worth's (awesome) museums. Personally the Carter is my favorite.

The last three times I've been to Yucatan have been extremely underwhelming and disappointing. We were there just last Sunday and it bordered on dreadful. I used to love that place but I don't think we'll be patronizing that place again.

Now La Familia...you have excellent taste. IMHO, the best Tex-Mex food in town.

Don't leave.

Best advise ever doled out on this board.

The Woodshed is good, but wait for TCU to be back in session before going. I would suggest H2 Gourmet Burger downtown in the Red Goose Saloon for one of your lunches (it's next to Reata, which I also recommend). Look for one of the owners, a very obviously red-haired man, in the kitchen. If he's not in there, don't bother. Thursdays are bacon days there, so that's your best bet.

The museums are good, but that depends on how hot it is and how much your wife and you like museums in general. Fire Station No. 1 downtown (a museum) is a good way to kill 30 minutes to an hour.

Reata rooftop bar is pretty awesome.

Del Frisco's is ALL Ft. Worth and is an outstanding high end steakhouse.

Paris Coffee Shop for breakfast on Saturdays.

Railhead for BBQ.

Dutch's for burgers.

Uncle Julio's for mexican.

Sushi Axiom at Montgomery Plaza for sushi (duh).

Salsa Limon burrito stand across Berry from Fuzzy's (by TCU bookstore) has perhaps the best burritos ever!

Ft. Worth Tavern on Hulen has a great mid-priced menu with american & mexican influence.

Cheers!

Dutch's is a must. The best burgers in Fort Worth and you can see some cool photos from TCU football history hanging on the walls.

Also, since you're staying in Sundance Square, there is a great comedy club there called 4 Day Weekend. It's very funny improv comedy that you and the wife will enjoy.

If you want Steak: Lonesome Dove, Cattlemans, or Chop House. Toss up between the first and last.

If you want BBQ: Angelo's. Railhead is a close runner up.

If you want a burger: Dutch's.

If you want Mexican: Uncle Julio's (typical texmex), or Joe T. Garcia's (traditional family style mexican food).

For dessert, go to Marble Slab Creamery.

Walk around Sundance Square at night. Visit the stockyards. Check out the stadium. Walk around campus. Go to the zoo.

If she is so inclined, go to the cultural district and see the museums. The Kimbell is literally a world-class small museum, Carter has American Art, and the Modern has, well Modern art. Then at the edge of the district is the Museum of Science and History, which as great exhibits (although some may be closed for work now), a neat planetarium, and an Omnimax theater showing lots of great educational movies in an awesome format. That would pretty well, take up an entire morning or afternoon there, if you did it all. All the museums are walking distance from one another.

Oh, and for real original-style Tex-Mex, try El Fenix on Camp Bowie. Their basic recipes have not changed for over 50 years. So many of the newer ones are what I call "Yuppieized."

Fort Worth is amazingly easy to get around in, considering its size.

You're going to get many very good restaurant suggestions.

Benitos on Magnolia is a good bet for a certain style of authentic Tex-Mex.

Dutch's is not the best burger in town, but is the nearest to campus. Perennial TCU favorite Charley's on Granbury is also a good bet.

Dutch's is the most overrated burger in Fort Worth! Barley makes it into the Top 20. If you want the best burger in Fort Worth, go to Pop's.
