Sun Devils Stadium has a natural grass field (hybrid Bermuda...I guess some Tiff or similar, like we have). So much better to be playing on grass. At least it is a stadium most of us have not been to.

Any ASU people out there? Tell us some more about the stadium. Also, how is the footing and drainage of the field?

I believe It is a hybrid. This is a cross, ah, of Bluegrass, Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilia...

Yeah, but the Rose Bowl is a cross between Kentucky Bluegrass, Featherbed Bent, and Northern California Sensemilla. Not the best football playing surface, but you can play 4 quarters on it and then get stoned to the begezzus belt afterward.

The Rose Bowl field was weird, as were our cleats for that game. BTW, we did win.

Just checked MSU's field and it's a mix of Kentucky Bluegrass and others. So no advantage there. :sad:

Natural grass returned to Spartan Stadium in 2002 after a 33-year absence, with the installation of a modular field. The new playing surface, planted in May of 2001 at MSU's Hancock Turfgrass Research Center, was comprised of a blend of nine varieties of Kentucky bluegrass. The original switch from natural grass to artificial turf came in time for the 1969 season.

Not sure of the exact number, but I think we went over ten years on plastic grass without having a starting QB make it all the way through the season without an injury. Does that sound right? Would have been in the mid-70s to mid-80s or so? At any rate, the natural grass seemed to cut down on season ending injuries when we returned to it.
