Golfweek: New Mexico claims two-shot victory over TCU

By Ron Balicki

ORO VALLEY, Ariz. – New Mexico has a solid group of talented seniors who have helped lift the Lobos to the No. 4 spot in the final fall Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings.

But it was a pair of young sophomores that came through in the clutch Tuesday when New Mexico captured the 33rd Arizona Intercollegiate title at the Golf Club at Vistoso just outside Tucson.

Victor Perez birdied three of his last four holes and Gavin Green completed his final five holes with a trio of birdies as the Lobos closed with a 3-under-par 281 for an 8-under 844 total. ...

Ok, I know that I will hear it from the golf purists, but there is no reason that a kid who catches his mistake and brings it to the officials attention should be disqualified. According to the article:

But when Paul Barjon's score was posted as a 2-under 69, the freshman came to Montigel and said it was a mistake and he actually shot 70. The TCU coach reported the discrepancy to scoring officials, and after another check of the scorecard, that was in fact the case.

I understand that is the way it has always been in golf, but please it is 2013, not 1813.

He had a chance to catch it before he turned his card in. All he was responsible for was the hole by hole score and he had a 4 when he made a 5. My guess is the kid that added it up and it added to 70 and Paul signed it and walked off without checking the hole by hole. Then when the officials added it up it came out to 69. That's when you have a problem. Players responsibility and he screwed up. Guarantee you he won't ever make the mistake again of not checking the hole by hole. Better to learn at a tournament like this than something big

One of the dumb rules in golf that needs to be changed. That same rule caused us to miss out going to state my senior year. Our #3 player did the same thing and tried to correct his score. The official told us that if he hadnt brought it up, it would have gone unnoticed. So we were all punished for being honest.

IMO, if you realize the mistake before all scores are official then it should be okay.

Unfortunately, it's official when you and your partner both sign the card and hand it to the rules official.

I'm not sure how you change that.

I know, I guess it just sticks out to me as dumb because of what it cost us. I just believe if you find a mistake before everyones score is official, you should be allowed to change it.

It sucks when it happens but every player has an opportunity to double check their card before they turn it in. Falls on the player to make sure the numbers are right. You don't even have to add, just make sure each hole is correct

+1 And it sounds like the total on the card that he turned in was correct. this isn't match play so the total score is all that counts in the standings.
