GoFrogs: Women's Tennis sweeps USF

FORT WORTH – TCU women's tennis closed out the non-conference slate with a 4-0 win over USF on Sunday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The win improves TCU's home record to 3-1 this season and 3-0 in home matches played outdoors. Stevie Kennedy and Margaret Polk led the team with wins in both doubles and singles play.

"We needed this before conference starts," head coach Lee Taylor Walker said. "Our top three have continued to play at a high level. Coach Christopher has done a great job with Marie and Stevie this year and we want to keep them moving in a positive direction. Margaret getting over the hump today with a victory is not only big for her confidence, but the overall confidence of our team, We need to keep getting everyone healthy so we can benefit from the depth of our roster. Looking forward to getting our Big 12 season started off this week!"

DOUBLES RECAP
TCU took the doubles point for the second consecutive match due to some strong play from the back-end of the lineup. The Horned Frogs collected a swift win on court three before No. 2 secured the point.

Mercedes Aristegui and Choe Hule, playing in their second match together as a pair, made short work of their opponents at No. 3 doubles. The pair surged in front, 4-0, and held serve until the end to claim their second win together. Aristegui and Hule are 2-0 as a pair this season.

At No. 2, Polk and Kennedy won their break in the early stages, going up 3-1 and would hold serve to win their match, 6-3. It was their first match together as a pairing, giving them a 1-0 record on the season. The win clinched the doubles point for TCU. The Horned Frogs have now won three doubles points this season, including each of their last two contests.

SINGLES RECAP
Singles play started off strong for TCU. The Horned Frogs led by a break on the top four courts midway through the first set and continued to push, collecting wins from No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 to collect the win.

Kennedy earned the first point with a strong showing at No. 3. The junior showed poise and determination, covering the court well to frustrate her opponent and collect break points. She won the final three games of her opening set to win, 6-2, before doing the same in her second set, taking a 3-3 score and turning it into a 6-3 win on court three. The win improves her record to 3-1 this season. She has now secured victories at each of the top-three singles positions.

Polk turned in another hard-nosed effort at No. 4. The freshman put together weeks of hard work to thrill the home fans with a victory on the purple courts. Her defensive effort was superb as she continuously worked to return shots and keep rallies alive on her way to a well-earned victory in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6. She won a break early in her first set to take the lead, then fended off a feisty comeback attempt to collect her first dual win as a Horned Frog in the second.

At No. 1, Marie Norris was her usual self. Showing poise and relentless drive to overcome a loss in the second set and come away with a dual clinching victory, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. With the win, Norris stays undefeated in dual singles play this year, with a phenomenal 4-0 record.
