GoFrogs: TCU Sweeps New Mexico

FORT WORTH – TCU women's tennis improves to 2-0 on the season following a 4-0 victory over New Mexico (1-2) Thursday afternoon at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. Mercedes Aristegui and Chloe Hule each won both their matches to spur the Horned Frogs to victory. TCU now leads the all-time series with New Mexico, 13-0.

DOUBLES RECAP
The Horned Frogs had to fight to give New Mexico its first doubles losses of the 2020 season. Maragaret Polk and Aristegui worked quickly, going up a break, 2-1 before claiming a 6-4 victory. Stevie Kennedy and Hule traded holds for a majority of the match before a late break put them in front. The doubles point was clinched when Kennedy lobbed a perfectly accurate shot over the opponents on match point, putting TCU up, 1-0 in the duel.

SINGLES RECAP
TCU clinched the duel with wins on courts one, three and five.

The first victory came from Marie Norris. Norris, playing at No. 5, made short work of her opening set, winning the final five games to win, 6-1. Resistance increased in the second set as both players held serve to a 3-3 score line before Norris showed off her shot-making ability to win three of the next four games, winning the match, 6-1, 6-4. It is her team-best fourth win of the 2020 season. Her singles record now stands at 4-1.

Aristegui was next to get on the board for TCU as the sophomore No. 1 used high energy on the defensive end to gain a one set advantage, 6-3. The second set would go to a tiebreak, where both players served well to a 3-3 score. Aristegui went up a minibreak, 4-3, before a tremendous backhand down the line perplexed her opponent and put her in front, 6-3. With momentum squarely on her side of the net, Aristegui finished off her opponent to win, 6-3, 7-6(3). The win advances her career record at No. 1 singles to 2-0.

On court three, Hule was locked in a fight to open the match. Her first set went back and forth as both players utilized strong service games and powerful groundstrokes to produce high quality and entertaining tennis. The set would have to be decided in a tiebreak, where Hule showed her mental toughness and eventually out-dueled her opponent to go ahead in the match. In the second set, Hule rode the momentum she gained in the first to a 6-4 victory. It was her first singles win of the new year, clinching the duel for the Horned Frogs.

Up Next
TCU will travel to Orlando, Fla., next weekend for three matches. The slate begins on Friday, Feb. 14 against UCF, followed by matches with UC Santa Barbara (Feb. 15) and Nebraska (Feb. 16).
